The Gospel of Matthew
Bible Promises
New Testament
God Promises He Will Show Mercy to the Merciful - (Matthew 5:7)

Bible Promise
I will show mercy to those who are merciful to others.

Bible Verse
And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy."

Reading Notes
Mercy is the bedrock upon which our salvation was established. It was God's abundant mercy and grace that He sent His only begotten Son, to take on the debt we could not afford to pay. And mercy is the seasoning that falls upon all we do through Jesus who strengthens us. Without God's mercy, we would all be facing a future judgment too terrible to consider. The word used for mercy by Jesus in this passage, goes beyond giving those who repent another chance. It carries the additional meaning of being greatly concerned for their well being, along with a desire to do good for them.

This includes having a desire to treat them with compassion and understanding, as well as having their best interest at heart. It's this trait of mercy that we build stronger and stronger through the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. And it's this trait of mercy which defines us, as followers of Christ. Moreover, this is a characteristic which can only come through the work of the Holy Spirit in us. And it's the lack of mercy, which is characteristic of those who do not know Jesus and those who have turned their hearts away from the Lord. Mercy is the one fruit of the spirit, we should most seek to cultivate as believers. Because it's from a heart grounded in mercy and grace, a heart filled with love and compassion for others, that all other attributes of a godly character grow.
