The Epistle of First John
Bible Promises
New Testament
God Promises He Will Keep Us from the Evil One - (1st John 5:18)

Bible Promise
I will keep you safe from the evil one.

Bible Verse
We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

Reading Notes
We are born of God, or more specifically God chose us in Christ Jesus before the foundations of the world were laid in place. And through the power of the Holy Spirit, we received salvation through our faith in Christ. With our salvation, we were born anew as children of God adopted into the family of God as children and joint-heirs with Christ. The word used for "touch him" as we see written in this verse has the meaning of "laying hold of something" or "grasping something and holding on." And that's what John is referring to here. Because we belong to God through Christ, and we have the presence of the Holy Spirit with us, Satan cannot get hold of the Christian or grasp them. Our eternity is secure in Christ Jesus our Lord, therefore Satan out of his hatred for God will do what he can to harass God's children and cause them to stumble.

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we not only become children of God and joint heirs with Christ; but we also belong to God and we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. With our salvation, our spirit which was dead in trespasses and sins, was replaced by a new spirit, sensitive to the things of God. Therefore, we now belong to the Lord. God has sovereignty over us and our lives. This means Satan cannot lay hold of us or grasp us, and even Satan must operate within God's sovereign will. Satan cannot affect us beyond what God allows. In addition, this verse tells us that God keeps us and watches over us with eternity in mind. And that's important to remember, because when God looks at us, He does so with eternity in mind. And because of that, God will work all things out for our eternal good as they relate to His purposes. Moreover, it's not through our own power we are protected, it's by the power of God and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that we are kept. And this is part of the promise of God, which tells us we are secure in the hands of Jesus when we commit our lives to Him.
