Lord, You have been favorable to Your land; You have brought back the captivity of Jacob. You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people; You have covered all their sin. Selah

Reading Notes
This psalm is a prayer and a pledge to God for His faithfulness. This psalm is probably picturing the return from Babylonian exile as the Jewish people came back from Babylon to re-inhabit the land. Their time of judgment was over and God, true to His word has restored them back to the land of Israel. However, because of the sins of the people, they were still suffering persecution. The people who had moved into the area after the exile of Judah were not happy to see them return and as a result, they did whatever they could do, to thwart the efforts to rebuild. Therefore, the people were once again turning toward God for help. God throughout His word and through His prophets has always promised the land of Israel to the Jewish people.

And this promise has not changed, the land of Israel belongs to God's chosen people Israel, and it does not belong to anyone else. It's not to be shared because this is the land God promised to His chosen people, the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Regardless of man's claims God has promised to restore His people to their land. And here the psalmist is praising God for that promise and for covering the sins of the people. The ultimate fulfillment of this promise will be during the Messianic Kingdom after the return of Jesus. A time when Israel will not only be given all of the land promised to her, but Jesus will rule and reign from Jerusalem. A time when the nation of Israel as a whole will come to faith in Jesus and the faithful remnant will dwell in the land.
