Bible Word of the Day
Bible Vocabulary
Calvin, John (Calvinism, Reformed Theology)

Meaning
John Calvin was born in 1509 and died in 1564. Calvin first went to Paris as a young man to prepare for the priesthood, but changed his mind and decided to become a lawyer instead. And it was during his training to become a lawyer that he experienced a conversion to evangelical Christianity. Many scholars believe this happened in the fall of 1533. After finishing seminary from that point forward Calvin spends his life in an effort to prepare ministers for preaching God's word and to help explain God's word to the church.

Calvin taught that mankind was depraved and dead in their trespasses and sins. Therefore, salvation was a work of God by faith alone in Christ alone given to us by God's grace. This went against Catholic teaching. Calvinism became part of the Protestant Reformation and Reformed Christianity. Calvinism was also called the Reformed tradition, Reformed Christianity or the Reformed faith. Calvinism can be summed up by the five points of Calvism known by the acronym TULIP.

T stands for total depravity in other words man is dead in his trespasses and sins. U for unconditional election which means God chose us for salvation before the foundation of the world was laid in place. L for limited atonement which means Jesus did not die for all people, but those God chose for salvation. Those who do not accept Calvism would argue this means God chose those whom He, in His foreknowledge knew would accept Jesus. I for irresistible grace which means God the Holy Spirit must first change or do a work in the heart of a person in order for them to understand and receive the Gospel message. And that this work and salvation are irresistible by the person whom God chooses. P for the perseverance of the saints which means through the work of the Holy Spirit, Christians have the ability maintain their faith and their walk with Jesus.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved." Book of Ephesians 1:3-6)

"As it is written: 'There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one. Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit'; 'The poison of asps is under their lips Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; Destruction and misery are in their ways; And the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes.'" (Book of Romans 3:10-18)

"But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. 'My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. I and My Father are one.'" (Gospel of John 10:26-30)
