The Book of Isaiah
Bible Promises
Old Testament
God Promises He Will Heal Brokenhearted and Comfort Those Who Mourn - (Isaiah 61:1-2)

Bible Promise
I bind up the brokenhearted and I will comfort all who mourn.

Bible Verse
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn.

Reading Notes
These words were read by Jesus when He entered the Nazareth synagogue on the Sabbath day. He had just finished His forty days in the wilderness while being tempted by Satan. These passages were Messianic passages regarding the coming of the Messiah. After Jesus read these passages he told the crowd, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." They knew what Jesus was telling them. He was claiming that He was the Messiah, the Savior of the world. Jesus was telling the crowd that today was the day of God's visitation on mankind. Dear believer, these words should never sound as sweet as they do to a child of God, we who are redeemed by the blood of Christ. We know and understand that Jesus is who He claimed to be, the Messiah.

Jesus is the eternal God of Heaven, who stepped out of eternity, took on humanity in order that He could save us from our sins. We have been held captive, dead in our trespasses and sins and bound to the punishment which awaited us because of the hardness of our hearts. However, Jesus by His death and resurrection and our faith in Him broke through those bonds and set us free. By His sacrifice on our behalf, He has given us liberty and a new life through Him. And with our new life comes the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and a new heart because of the Holy Spirit's work of sanctification in us. A new heart to comfort those who mourn. A new heart to help those in need and a new love which drives us to seek the lost with the Good News of Christ Jesus our Lord.
