The Book of Psalms
Through the Psalms
Old Testament
The Lord is Our Tabernacle, He is Our Dwelling Place - (Psalm 84:1-4)

Daily Praise
How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of hosts my soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young. Even Your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in Your house; they will still be praising You. Selah

Reading Notes
This psalm celebrates traveling to Jerusalem to worship before the Lord during one of the annual feast. The joy expressed here is because of the privilege and specialness of coming before the Holy God of the universe in worship and praise. The Israelites could only do this during certain times of the year, so these occasions called for celebration and joy. And that's exactly how every follower of Christ should feel daily. Because of what Jesus did for us, we can come before God the Father and worship Him and celebrate our relationship with Him as His children. The blood of Jesus shed for us on the Cross of Calvary has restored our relationship with God, for those who place their faith in Christ.

This psalm in particular opens by describing the Temple of the Lord as our sanctuary. Showing us that God's presence is not only lovely, but our souls faint to be in His presence. All humanity was created to worship God. We all have a longing in our souls to restore our relationship with God. A relationship which has been broken because of sin. And it's this longing for a restored relationship with God through Christ that our souls cry out to God. The psalmist then points out that not only is God's presence our home and where we belong, but also the sparrows and swallows rest there as well. This is a metaphor representing the truth that all of creation finds its place, its home in the Lord.
