Prize Your Marriage More than Your Treasures - (Proverbs 5:15-18)

Daily Wisdom
Drink water from your own cistern, and running water from your own well. Should your fountains be dispersed abroad, streams of water in the streets? Let them be only your own, and not for strangers with you. Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth.

Reading Notes
Water is necessary for life, therefore wells were highly prized possessions. Having one meant security and the ability to live, grow and thrive. To purposely destroy something so vitally important to life itself, would be beyond understanding and reason. And this is why the writer is using this analogy in reference to marriage. In our lives today we spend all kinds of time, money and effort to manage our material things and the same can be said about our hobbies and desires. However, how much time and effort do we spend on our marriages? How much more time, love and effort should we be investing in every minute of our marriage! We are called by God to share our hearts, our love and our dreams with our spouses, before we ever share them with others.

More importantly, we are called to do so from the beginning of marriage, to keep our relationships healthy and our marriage growing. Christ gave Himself for us and that is the key to a happy marriage and a happy life. To put it another way, "It's not about you!" The greatest secret of giving to others is we get more joy and happiness in return than we give; but we will never understand it until we start doing it. For all of us who have entered into the covenant of marriage before the eyes of God, we need to understand the importance of sacrificial love. We are to put our spouses ahead of ourselves and work at all times in their best interest. All of our actions are to help build an environment for our spouses which enable them to thrive and grow in the Lord. Therefore, the first place to start, is with our hearts! We are to give our hearts to our spouses, we are to give our lives for our spouses, just as Jesus had given to us. Why? Because they are our God given partner, meant to share in the life we live as husband and wife becoming one flesh, both submitting to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and one another.
