Reading Notes
Most of these nations were related to Israel either as decedents through Ishmael, Esau or Lot. And all of them were enemies of Israel and haters of God. Worshiping pagan idols instead of the true and living God of Israel. Moreover, we see this ancient hatred today as these very same nation's make up the who's who of Israel's enemies in our times. These very same nations in ancient times came against Israel and were dramatically destroyed by God who gave them into the hands of the Israelites. During this time Assyria was the major world power, later to be replaced by Babylon. The Northern Kingdom of Israel fell to the Assyrians in 722 B.C., this was because of their apostasy and their refusal to turn back toward God.

However, Assyria never defeated the Southern Kingdom of Judah, because at key points Judah had godly kings, who sought the Lord. In Assyria's case God sent an angel which slew over one hundred thousand men surrounding Jerusalem. However, in Judah's case, in the end, the Southern Kingdom fell to Babylon after a series of revolts led by ungodly kings. In addition, the Bible tells us there will be no shortage of enemies against God and His people in this dark world we live in. Jesus Himself told us that there would be wars and rumors of wars and that lawlessness would abound, with the love of many growing cold as we grow closer to the end times. However, we must trust in God, who Himself told us He will bless those nations who bless Israel and curse those nations who curse Israel.
