Therefore God Shall Judge All Evil Rulers - (Psalm 82:6-8)

Daily Praise
I said, "You are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High. But you shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes." Arise, O God, judge the earth; for You shall inherit all nations.

Reading Notes
Jesus quoted this passage "You are gods" in John 10:34 when referring to human rulers and leaders. That is because kings and judges are ultimately setup by God who lends authority to rulers to ensure the orderly and godly functioning of society. Like priests, they are to be God's representatives here on earth, ensuring God's justice and mercy is given out to all people fairly and without bias. However, when they rebel against the Lord and refuse to act in a godly manner, God may revoke this authority at any time and bring judgment upon them and their kingdom, especially if the people have followed a wicked ruler. Nothing can destroy a society faster than wicked leaders who turn the hearts of the people away from God.

Moreover, because they are mortal they may suffer death while in their rebellion against God, and thereby bring everlasting destruction upon themselves. This section of psalms then ends with a prayer for God's judgment on the whole earth as well as a foreshadowing of the day when Jesus shall inherit the earth and rule over all nations. It's important to see that all people; those in power as spoken of here and those who are not will be held responsible by God for what He has given us. As followers of Jesus, we are called to use our time, talents and resources to help others and spread the Gospel of Christ to a dark and dying world. How we used our blessings, on whom did we use them and what we did with our blessings is important to God.
