Reading Notes
This psalm was written when David was fleeing from his son Absalom and it appeared he was losing his kingdom. David feared for his life and his words give us a pattern for praising God during dire times of distress. It teaches us that when all else fails, God will be there for us. When all seems lost, God is there. When everyone around us tells us it's hopeless, God is there! And He alone can lift us up and restore us for His purposes. Here in this psalm David is facing a situation where everyone around him, including his advisors are telling him he is through. All hope seemed to be lost. In addition, this situation is really the failures of David's past coming back to destroy him. History shows us that David was a better king, a better general and a better leader than he was a father.

David had neglected his duties as a father and as a result, his son Absalom had turned against him. Because of David's failure to act when he should have, he is not only suffering the consequences, but also bearing the shame, guilt and heartache of a relationship with his son so badly damage, his own son is seeking to take his life. Absalom because of his anger, had long planned the overthrow of his father's kingdom. He spent years putting all the pieces into place, and now his trap has been sprung and his plan is playing out. However, the difference is Absalom left God out of the equation, whereas David relied solely on God. David had repented long ago and tried to make things right. And because David's heart was right with the Lord and his relationship with God intact, he was able to call out to God for help during a very desperate time in his life. We too, because of Jesus can call on God in desperate times of trouble. Moreover, we should speak to God daily as part of our ongoing relationship. A relationship which was restored through Christ Jesus our Lord.
