God is Recounting His Covenant with His People - (Psalm 81:8-10)

Daily Praise
"Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you O Israel, if you will listen to Me there shall be no foreign god among you; nor shall you worship any foreign god. I am the Lord your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt; open your mouth wide, and I will fill it."

Reading Notes
This section of passages evokes the images of the covenant God made with His people at Sinai when He gave them the Ten Commandments. We see this in verse ten which closely resembles the preface in Exodus verse 20:2. In addition the opening verses of these passages summarize the first two of the Ten Commandments. The covenant God made with His people was an expression of His grace toward them and part of His plan of redemption for mankind. The nation of Israel was meant to be a nation of priests to the rest of the world. And because of that, God's blessing came with a condition attached.

That condition was their covenant relationship with God. Israel were God's chosen people, they were a special inheritance of the Lord. Moreover, they were called to tell the world about the living God of Israel. Israel was called to carry out a special destiny by the Lord. A destiny that would lead to the coming of Messiah, the Lamb of God, who would provide redemption for humanity. Here the Lord is promising to fill the people with His Holy Spirit and with His blessings, if the people will listen to Him. God will not violate our free will. As a loving God, He gives us the free will to choose to follow Him or to follow sin and the consequences sin brings. God is recounting His miraculous deeds performed on behalf of His people. This is a reminder for the people, a reminder of the covenant they have made with the Lord.
