The Book of Psalms
Through the Psalms
Old Testament
Assemble, Worship the Lord God in Loud Praise - (Psalm 81:1-3)

Daily Praise
Sing aloud to God our strength; make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob. Raise a song and strike the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the lute. Blow the trumpet at the time of the new moon, at the full moon, on our solemn feast day.

Reading Notes
This psalm is a celebration to the Lord. However, Bible scholars are unsure if this was sung during the Passover, or during the New Year or during the feasts of Tabernacles. The context of the psalm suggests that it was sung during the feast celebration, most likely during the feast of tabernacles or trumpets. The month "Tishri" was the seventh month of Israel's year, the month began with the blowing of the trumpets, which began several celebrations or feasts. It was often referred to as the month of the "feasts and celebrations." It started at the beginning of the month and continued with the Day of Atonement on the tenth of the month, followed by the Feasts of Tabernacles on the fifteenth of the month, which began with the new moon. This psalm calls all of the people to worship God, to follow God, to repent and not turn away from the Lord.

This psalm has also been referred to as a prophetic hymn, why? Because after calling the people to assemble together and worship God, it then recounts how God led them out of Egypt and how God brought them into the Promised Land. It then speaks of the people's rebellion which had not yet happened. These opening verses are a shout aloud to God in praise and worship. Verse three refers to the new moon and the full moon, which represent the beginning and middle of the months in ancient Israel. These verses remind the people that God alone is the strength of their nation. This psalm and psalms like it are important for us because they remind us that God alone is the true strength of any nation. And it is through the Lord's blessings on people who love Him and have placed their trust in Him alone, that true prosperity and strength come.
