The Book of Psalms
Through the Psalms
Old Testament
Rebellion is Longing for Destruction - (Psalm 80:4-7)

Daily Praise
O Lord God of hosts, how long will You be angry against the prayer of Your people? You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in great measure. You have made us a strife to our neighbors, and our enemies laugh among themselves. Restore us, O God of hosts; cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved.

Reading Notes
God is angry with His people, they have rejected and rebelled against the Lord and now that God has brought the judgment, they so longed for, the people are returning to God and calling out to the Lord for rescue. We have to understand when we purposely rebel against God. When we deliberately do what He has told us not to do and we continue to do so, despite every warning and obstacle God has sent to stop us, then we are longing for God's judgment. And that's what we see here in these passages. The nation of Israel was called by God to be a nation of priests to the Gentiles, a light to the world showing the glory of God. Under God's guidance a faithful Israel was meant to be an example of political stability, moral purity and social justice to the rest of the Gentile world. However, the blessings of God were conditional based on their covenant relationship with the Lord. Unlike the surrounding nations, Israel had a special relationship with God.

As God's chosen people, they were set apart by God to carry out a unique destiny on the earth. But instead of honoring their covenant relationship with God, they instead threw away God's blessings, by chasing after idols. They ridiculed the very God who gave them all of what they had and made them a great kingdom. Therefore, God gave them over to their lust to receive the natural outcome of their actions, which was destruction. God gave the people what they wanted and He removed Himself and His protection from the people and their society. And now without God's protection they have been overrun by the very Gentile nations, they sought so desperately to imitate. And because of their own sin, they are now crying out to God for help. They now realize the foolishness and fatality of their rebellion against God and are once again seeking the Lord. Dear Christian we have to remember God wants for us a joyful and abundant life in Christ! And when we rebel against God and reject Jesus, we also throw away God's blessings and protection for us. We through rebellion and sin disregard what God is waiting to give us, because our faith in Jesus and our love for His word, the Bible.
