Bible Word of the Day
Bible Vocabulary
Canaan (Land of the Canaanites, Levant)
Meaning Canaan is the land which makes up all of Palestine, and today it consists of the land of Israel, Lebanon and Jordan, including Palestinian Territory all the way to the border with Egypt. This is also part of what the Bible calls the Promised Land. Canaan is part of the land grant God gave to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants who are the Jewish people. The name Canaan refers back to the descendants of Canaan who was the son of Ham and the grandson of Noah. Canaan and later his descendants settled in this land after the flood. However, over time the name became synonymous with the pagan cultures which inhabited the land.
These were the people the Bible calls "the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Anakites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites." Because of its geographic location sitting between the great empires of the ages it has fallen under the control at various times of Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, Greece and Rome. In addition, though it consists of a small area geographically, the land of Canaan had almost every type of environment imaginable, including beaches, deserts, high snow-capped mountains, fertile plains, lush forest, valleys and hills. It's also a very fertile land producing all types of crops and marine life while supporting many types of animals.
"God for centuries gave the people of the land the opportunity to turn back toward Him, however they rebelled against the Lord. During the Exodus God gave Joshua very specific instructions to inhabit the land, however Israel became complacent and never did fully obey God and take possession of all the land the Lord had given them."On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: 'To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates'" (Boook of Genesis 15:18)
