The Book of Psalms
Through the Psalms
Old Testament
Our Sin Reflects On God's Name in Society - (Psalm 79:10)

Daily Praise
Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Let there be known among the nations in our sight the avenging of the blood of Your servants which has been shed.

Reading Notes
God's people had rebelled against Him! Despite all the blessings He had given them. Despite their rich heritage which included God's intervention on behalf of their nation they still rejected God. And they did so while taking advantage of everything He alone had given them. God sent His prophets to warn the people, but instead of listening they persecuted the prophets and sought to kill them. Because of this God used the Assyrians and the Babylonians to judge His people. God in a sense gave the people up to their own lust and desires which in turn brought the Babylonians to their doorstep. In other words God did not cause the Assyrians and the Babylonians to attack, God did not cause the evil to happen.

Rather God after multiple warnings gave the people what they wanted, a society without God and He removed His protection from them. That being said the Assyrians and Babylonians also knew of God's great miracles. In addition they showed no mercy, nor compassion and took pride and boasted in themselves over the God of Israel. Based on that behavior the psalmist here is appealing to God, for His own name's sake to take vengeance on their enemies. And through this we see the true change in the heart of the people, as they are turning back toward God. They are now showing more concern and heartbreak over the fact that their actions impugned the name of God among the Gentile nations, than over their own circumstances.
