Nancy Brinker

Founder and Chair, Global Strategy, Susan G. Komen®

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, JustAskBoo continues its candid conversation with part-time South Florida resident Nancy Brinker, founder of Susan G. Komen®, an organization that launched the global breast cancer movement.

If you had one message for women about their breast health, and especially younger women, what would it be?

Take care of you. Get educated about breast cancer and take action for your health. We have so much information on komen.org about breast cancer risks, what you should be looking for, the screenings that you should get, questions to ask your doctor. And for younger women, know that you're not immune if you're under 40 - I was in my mid-30s when I was diagnosed and Suzy died at 36. You're also not immune because there's no history of breast cancer in your family. The two most common risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and getting older. Every woman owes it to herself and her loved ones to be aware of this disease.

What are urgent needs that you think need to be met in breast cancer today? Five years? Ten years down the road?

Some of our scientists tell us that if we could eliminate disparities in treatment, we could reduce breast cancer death rates by a third or more. That means that we have to be sure that every woman and man has access to high-quality cancer care. So many people in our society don't - the uninsured, low-income women, people who don't have enough insurance or enough money to get good care. These are the people that Komen has been helping for years. We funded half a million screenings for uninsured women last year alone, and we provided funds that helped 50,000 women and families pay for co-pays, surgery, patient support programs. We even put food on the table and helped with living expenses.

What do you find most frustrating about the progress of the past 30 years?

Well, I had hoped that we would have found the cures for this disease a long time ago. We've been very effective with some forms of breast cancer, especially when it's caught early, but we have so much to do to solve the metastatic forms of the disease that will kill 40,000 women and men this year alone. Susan G. Komen has funded more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit; we're second only to the federal government. And while we've done quite a bit, we have quite a bit left to do.

What is your advice for people looking to follow their passion and start a non-profit?

Be ready to work really, really hard. Be ready to be disappointed. Be ready to be told no. Be ready to be told 'it can't be done,' and do it anyway.

Scarred and Scared
From Anonymous:  REPLY
The combination of my adult-onset acne and dermatillomania (a skin picking disorder) has me very concerned that I will become permanently disfigured if I do not find a dermatologist to treat me who can also collaborate with a psychiatrist. If you have any recommendations, I would appreciate you sending them my way. I would prefer referrals to female dermatologists. Thank you!

You Are What You Eat

From Team JAB

While mammograms and breast self-exams are important in the early detection of breast cancer, there are also things we can do to help in cancer prevention. One of them is diet. Team JAB consulted with Holistic Dietician and Nutritionist at the Sari Ashe Center Tracy Hirtz MS, RD, LN for recommendations on "super foods" that help to protect against cancer.

  • Garlic, cooked or raw, has been shown to be a powerful protector against many cancers.
  • Cruciferous vegetables like kale, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage protect your cells from DNA damage and inactivate carcinogens.
  • The probiotics formed in the fermentation process of foods like unpasteurized sauerkraut, kimchi, umeboshi plumbs, Kefir and yogurt help to neutralize carcinogens in the gut.
  • Flax seeds, with their high lignan content, promote hormonal balance.
  • Beans and legumes have protective phytonutrients and lots of fiber.
  • Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries are colorful fruits loaded with protective chemicals.

My 27-year-old sister is very depressed. She has a child and her condition is really starting to worry me. She says she wants help, but when I offer suggestions she says she can't take the time off work or afford to see someone. I am not sure what to do. If you have any advice and/or insight, I would love to hear from you.

Spa For Your Clothes
From Irina Floyd Rothenberg:  REPLY
Want to keep your skin and your lungs healthy? Detoxify your wardrobe!  Just like your body enjoys pampering, so do your garments. At OZO2 we will use the gentlest methods of cleaning so you won't have to inhale the remnants of toxic solvents embedded in the fabric. Remember to remove protective plastic covers from your outfits when you bring them home. Clothes must breathe to stay supple and strong. Moisture trapped under the cover will cause fibers to become brittle or develop mildew spots. Need a consultation? Click HERE for our locations and other information.*
