The next time you see your kids vegging out in front of the television or putting off their required summer reading for one last video game, ask them this quick math question: if summer vacation is 73 days and we have already enjoyed 46 of them, how many lazy days of summer are left? The answer may shock both of you! With less than four weeks left before school starts (27 days to be exact) it's not too late to wake those sleepy brains with activities that will help get the kids geared up and classroom ready. If you haven't been the academic taskmaster you vowed to be at the beginning of the summer, don't worry - Team JAB has got you covered. Read on for tips from local educators on how to help the kids pick up academically where they left off 46 days ago. And since you're in a helpful mood, why not also help a JABBER who needs to catch a bus to her wedding!

Happy JABBING!

Fighting the Brain Drain!
With the start of school right around the corner, you may think it's too late to avoid the summer brain drain. But fear not! Director of Rosarian Academy's Academic Center for Enrichment, Erin Jones, M.S.Ed offers these suggestions for incorporating everyday activities into the remainder of the summer to promote the cognitive skills needed for a successful beginning to the school year.
  • Support and enhance memory skills, number and shape recognition, reading skills and eye-hand coordination with board games such as Scrabble, Monopoly, and Boggle. Game Apps can be used as a substitute, however, traditional board games have the added bonus of promoting communication skills and language development.
  • Encourage critical thinking skills by creating new experiences such as taking a family trip to the local park, exploring local museums, or cooking new recipes. Older children can use the internet to research possibilities and plan an itinerary.
  • Boost writing skills by keeping a journal of summer activities and new experiences. Younger children can cut out and glue pictures related to these activities. Journal entries do not have to be lengthy to be effective. Interactive journaling where the parent responds to a child's entry by writing a sentence or two can be particularly helpful. An email between parent and
child may be helpful for resistant writers.
  • Reinforce math skills by connecting concepts with real world experiences. Children can help to develop a budget related to summer trips and new experiences. Even young children can help with measuring and timing when creating new recipes in the kitchen.

Golden Retriever Found

From Tatiana Camp:  REPLY
I found a young male, golden retriever mix near Downtown Miami on July 12th. He was wearing a collar but his tags were removed. He is very sweet and I would keep him if I could, but my building does not allow pets. If you know who he may belong to, please contact me. Unfortunately, I will have to take him to a shelter if I am unable to find his owner.
