Summer vacation is 10 weeks of heaven on earth for kids and parents alike.  No school and no homework mean carefree days and nights, without the academic structure that the school year brings. Summer means more time for the kids to hang out at the pool and beach, ride bikes and skateboard and while we hate to admit it, watch television and play video games. While all of us with children welcome the refreshing and well deserved break that the end of the school year brings, studies show that allowing kids to rest their brains all summer can lead to learning loss that will leave them playing catch-up when the school year starts.

This week, we're sharing tips to help your child avoid the proverbial summer brain drain. Read on to find out ways to keep your kids on track academically without interfering with the break that you and they have been waiting nine months for.

Happy learning and Happy JABBING!!

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

Raise Your Hand
From Anonymous:  REPLY
I am looking for recommendations for deodorant. Lately, the only ones that work on me are those made for men. I don't care for the smell and they irritate my skin. If you are happy with your deodorant, please share your favorite brand. Also, if you have ever used a prescription deodorant, I would love to hear your feedback. Thanks!

Avoid the Slip and Slide!

Studies show that on average, kids lose approximately two months of knowledge over the summer. JABBER and Children/Teen Librarian at the Mandel Public Library in West Palm, Jennifer McQuown, provides these tips for encouraging kids to continue reading and learning over the break.

  • Plan a "Read the Book, See the Movie Event." Have your child read a book such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Harry Potter, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs or Great Gatsby then discuss whether they preferred the book or the movie and their reasons why.
  • Encourage younger children to read road signs and directions to various locations such as the library and the Science Museum.
  •  Bring audio books on long car trips. This will keep the entire family engaged in the car and is a great way to introduce children to classic literature that they might not normally pick out on their own.
  • Have children become the family chef for a day. They can choose the recipes, prepare the grocery list and write the menu.  Following the recipe will help them practice their reading skills.
For more tips on avoiding the summer brain drain from the National Summer Learning Association, click HERE. And make sure to check out the following programs at Mandel Public Library that are sure to help your children fall in love with reading!

Read and Thy Shall Receive

Elementary and preschool age kids can sign up at the children's desk for the summer reading program that runs through July 31. Participants will receive a log to track their reading. For each week they participate, they will receive a free book and a chance to win a LeapPad or Android Tablet.

Dog Days of Summer
On Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays 10:30 am-12:00 pm, through July 27, children can meet the library's  specially trained therapy dogs that will listen to your child read! This is a great way to get reluctant readers to practice.

Little Explorers
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm through July 25, elementary and preschool age kids can participate in the library's Come Together: Explore Imagination program where they will explore exciting, new adventures in an interactive program designed especially for each age group.

All in the Family
On Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 am through July 17, the entire family is invited to listen and discuss stories, sing songs and participate in arts and crafts.
