Some of you might remember this time last year, when I wrote asking you all for moral support. My oldest daughter Caroline was heading off to sleep-away camp for the first time. I survived. But I'm sorry to report, this year I'm back, and I'm falling apart all over again. And this time it's worse. She wants to take her little sister Aly with her this year. And the worst part is that Aly wants to go! Don't get me wrong ... Paul and I are already making plans for a blissful six days without drop-offs, pick-ups and peacekeeping . But I'm going to miss them, even though they are having the best time E-V-E-R.

Meanwhile, while they are blobbing and singing and zip-lining and s'moresing and bonding and campfiring, I will be JABBING with you guys. I certainly look forward to that.

As for you, JABBERS, how will your kids spend the summer? Are your campers the independent types who love sleeping in wood cabins with their friends? Or are they close-to-home types who prefer to play all day and sleep in their own beds at night? Fortunately for all of us, no matter what personalities our kids have, what hobbies they're into, or what their interests are, there is a camp for each them right here in South Florida. We hope you will find this Special Edition a helpful guide in finding just the right summer spot for each of your little campers.

Happy camping and Happy JABBING!

-Boo

To Medicate Or Not To Medicate, That Is The Question
From Anonymous:  REPLY
My son was diagnosed with ADHD at the beginning of this school year. His condition is being managed with medication. I have received mixed advice from both my friends and pediatrician as to whether I should discontinue the medication over the summer. If you have experience with this, I would love to hear from you. Also, I would appreciate any recommendations for camps that would be good for very active, high-energy boys ages seven and nine. Thank you!

JABBERS' Picks: What To Pack For Sleepaway Camp
From Team JAB
We wanted to know what you like to pack in your kids' trunk to make their stay at sleepaway camp feel more like home. Here are a few of your top picks:

Something To Write Home About
Victoria Assa says, "Stamped envelopes, pre-addressed to family and friends, to make it as easy as possible for your camper to write letters!"

Picture This
Anne Shaner says, "I love to send them with family pictures that they can tape to the wall."

Makes Perfect Scents
Lili Jolivert, "My daughter used to ask me to spray a pillowcase with my perfume. She said that it made her feel like she was at home."

Cut A Rug
Karen Meister says, "The girls love little rugs to place at the center of their bunk so their cute little feet don't get dirty/cold that first step out of bed."

Hidden Treasure
Hilty Hazzard says, "I don't have kids, but my mom would tuck little presents throughout my trunk. Candy, small games, etc. They would be in a pocket, tucked in a towel, in a shoe and I found these little gifts throughout my entire stay at camp. It was really fun!"

Put to Bed
Amy McCrory says, "I always packed a colorful comforter and fluffy decorative pillows for my daughter to brighten her bunk at camp. She says it reminds her of home."

Camp Around The Clock
From Whitney Stewart:  REPLY
There are a lot of great summer camps that sound interesting for my son but their hours always seem to be from 9am-1pm. If you know of any all day camps that would be fun for a seven-year-old boy, please send me their contact information. Thanks in advance!

Under Cover
From Team JAB
Living in South Florida, we are all diligent about protecting our children from the sun. But when we are not there to supervise, our kids are not always as careful as we hope. Did you know that just one sunburn in childhood more than doubles a person's chances of developing melanoma later in life? Whether your kids are attending day camp or are headed off to sleepaway camp this summer, make sure you equip them with great gear and some good advice. For tips from The American Camp Association on making sure your kids stay protected while having fun in the sun, click HERE.

From Arts To Athletics, We Have It All!
Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches is offering a variety of summer camp programs for students ages 8-16, ranging from the arts to athletics. Aspiring young jazz musicians can train with Juilliard School fellows and faculty members during workshops June 10-14 for middle school students and June 17-21 for high school students. Beginner to advanced athletes can develop their skills in sports such as lacrosse, volleyball, basketball, football and swimming, while learning the values of teamwork and sportsmanship during week-long sports camps running throughout the summer. For more information, call 561.972.9600 or click HERE.*

Summer Skills
From Rebecca Vargas:  REPLY
While I believe that summer should be all about fun, I would like to make sure that my kids' brains stay active while they are off from school. Can you recommend any educational apps or websites that will keep their academic skills sharp but that they will also enjoy doing? I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you!

Bound To Change
From Anonymous:  REPLY
Our teenage son has been making some bad decisions this school year and we are not pleased with the friends he has made. I've been told he might benefit from participating in a program this summer that instills leadership skills in young adults such as Outward Bound. If you have an experience with Outward Bound or a similar program, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Swimming With The Fishes Isn't Always A Bad Thing!
Would your kids rather be in the water than on land? Then Dive-In Snorkeling Adventure Camp is perfect for them!  Dive-In offers weekly sessions from 9am to 1pm for your adventure-loving offspring. In addition to snorkeling, campers will fish, cast nets, trap blue crabs and even hike. All the while learning about conservation and appreciation for their environment. All necessary gear is provided. For more information or to register, Call 561-319-1421 or click HERE.*

Ready Or Not?
From Drew Feinberg:  REPLY
I have two girls age 10 and a boy age 12 who have expressed an interest in sleepaway camp. I'm not sure they are ready as they have never been away from home for any extended period of time. I would love to hear from someone who has experience with this. Thanks!

Down By The Bay
From Liz Jensen:  REPLY
My son will be attending a sleepaway camp near the Chesapeake Bay this summer. I am looking to rent a 2-3 bedroom house for approximately ten days while he is there. If you know someone who is renting a home in Annapolis, Baltimore or Washington, D.C., please contact me. Thank you!

Special Delivery!
From Team JAB
Sharing bunks, kayaking, hiking and making smores are all part of the sleepaway camp experience. But nothing can compare to the feeling kids get when they receive their first care package from home. While we understand the urge to try and stuff everything your kid loves into one box, the following suggestions from Summer Camp Handbook  are sure to please your child and keep you sane in the process. Make sure you refer to the camp's policies on care packages before you go shopping since many items, such as food, may be forbidden. It's a great idea to send items that your child can share with other campers such as miniature board games like checkers or chess, Uno and other card games or our all-time favorite - MadLibs. You may also want to include a couple of items that will be solely for your child such as a blank scrapbook or journal or a small stuffed animal. Whatever you decide to send, we're sure your kids will love it! Happy packing!
