The Karate Kids

If you've ever attended a local gala, enjoyed a beautiful wedding reception or participated in a guided tour of one of the changing exhibits at the Flagler Museum, you have Jean Flagler Matthews to thank. Whitehall, the 75 room, 100,000 square foot Gilded Age Palm Beach home of Henry Flagler, built in 1902, was once described by the New York Herald as "more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world." Following Henry Flagler's death, Whitehall was purchased by private investors and transformed into a hotel. In 1959, the site was saved from demolition by Flagler's granddaughter and philanthropist, Jean Flagler Matthews who formed the nonprofit corporation, the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in order to purchase the property.
Under Jean Flagler Matthews' direction, Whitehall was opened to the public as the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum where she served as president until her death in 1979. Visited by over 100,000 people from around the world each year, today, the Flagler Museum is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
