Matters

October  7, 2013                                                                                    Issue #58

Because there is no health without Mental Health!

The trees are beautiful with their fall foliage, the air is fresh after oppressive heat. Football games have begun, as has the new school year. But you are filled with anxiety

Autumn can provoke anxiety for many people. It's a season of transition, which is anxiety-provoking in itself, and a transition toward winter, the season with the shortest days. Try to collect a handful of tools like these that you can use as the leaves fall and anxiety rises.

MHA OF GA HAS BEEN AWARDED THE NAVIGATOR GRANT!

We are proud to announce that we are part of a consortium of 14 partners, led by Seedco, a national non-profit organization that advances economic opportunity for people, businesses, and communities in need, that received a navigator grant in Georgia. The grant will provide "navigators'' to help consumers sign up for the upcoming health insurance exchange in the state. Our trained navigator, Lauren Callahan, will provide consumers with in-person assistance about qualified health insurance plans and help them to select the option that best meets their needs. In addition, Lauren will assist consumers and households in determining whether or not they are eligible for Medicaid, or for federal tax credits that will subsidize the cost of health insurance.

To learn more about your new health insurance options please contact Lauren Callahan at 678-904-1967 or by email [email protected]

Scientists have discovered how schizophrenia and the use of anti-psychotic drugs can impact brain tissue.

Researchers from the University of Iowa, led by psychiatry professor Nancy Andreasen, analyzed 202 MRI scans of patients who suffer from schizophrenia. All patients had their scans reviewed from their first episode of schizophrenia and at regular 6-month intervals, up to a period of 15 years.Click here to learn more

Alcohol neither causes nor prevents depression.

A new study does not support the belief that alcohol consumption causes depression - nor that it prevents it. This was the conclusion of clinical neuroscientists from the University of Western Australia (UWA).

They write about their findings in a paper published online recently in the journal "Molecular Psychiatry".To read the rest of the article, click here.

Exercise linked to reduced symptoms of depression.

Researchers say they have found evidence to support previous research that suggests exercise may reduce symptoms of depression, according to a review published in The Cochrane Library. The updated systemic review, conducted by UK researchers, analyzed the Cochrane Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis Review Group's Controlled Trials Register (CCDANCTR), which includes randomized controlled trials from various bibliographic databases. Click here to learn what they found.
