A Call To Serve Ministries
Service Opportunities Update - December 4, 2012 |
| Greetings!
This year was the first harvest from the Seeds 4 Needs Garden! The produce from the garden is given to those in need in the community. It mostly was delivered to the Community Food Shelf in Pella. The Seeds 4 Needs Garden is located on the West side of the ACTS building and it is roughly 600 sq ft.
Several varieties of plants were planted this year: tomatoes, snap peas, pole beans, bush beans, cucumber, lettuce, radishes, peppers, carrots, zucchini, onions, potatoes and various herbs.
Highlights from this year's harvest was a beautiful pumpkin garden and lettuce crops! The garden was able to produce 14 gallon sized bags of lettuce! The heat this past summer really affected the crop. We lost nearly all of the cucumbers and beans. Unfortunately the zucchini and carrot plants did not survive. The best crops this year were the tomatoes, lettuce and pumpkins. Click here for pictures of the harvest.
We want to say a big THANK YOU to Liz Drabek! She is our Volunteer Community Garden Supervisor. She and her children worked diligently watering, weeding and delivering food to the Community Food Shelf. Thanks for all your efforts this year!
Ways to get involved with the garden next year:
- Watering the garden - sign up for a day of the week
- Weeding the garden - sign up for a day of the week
- Mulching the garden to get moisture in
- Any donations of plants, seeds or compost
- Grow seedlings for the garden
Please contact Liz Drabek at lizdrabek@gmail.com if you want to get involved with the Seeds 4 Needs Garden.
At little about the Community Food Shelf ... it is located at the Peace Lutheran Church in Pella on Vermeer Road. It is an entirely volunteer run organization. In addition to the normal food items you typically donate to the food shelf they also regularly have a need for other staple items, such as Hamburger Helper, Cereal and Peanut Butter. They also like to provide clients with toiletries such as toilet paper, facial tissue, laundry detergent and hand soap. If you want to get involved with the Community Food Shelf, please contact Melissa Zula at melissazula@yahoo.com or you can donate items by delivering them to the Peach Lutheran Church.
Blessings,
