Dec. 9, 2013 (StudentsforLife) - It was two days before my seventeenth birthday, a Saturday morning, the day after a football game in which I'd played. So I was tired and sore, but I could smell breakfast coming from downstairs and somebody was walking up the stairs. I was half asleep. The door opened: it was my girlfriend, I smiled, of course -- but from the look on her face I could see that this wasn't called for. This was a serious moment. I steeled myself.

After a few long seconds, she looked up at me and said, "I'm pregnant." That woke me up quick. We sat there in my bedroom, two young teenagers. My room was still a boy's place, hung with football posters, sneakers, and baseball gloves strewn across the floor. But there I was, sitting next to my pregnant girlfriend. I knew all of a sudden I'd lost the right to keep on being just a boy. My girlfriend went to an all-girls Catholic school and looked ahead to college, while I was dreaming of college football and a career in the NFL. We each had a plan for our lives. It was time to scrap those plans...

So when she found out that she was pregnant, she was surprised but took her boyfriend at his word when he said he would take care of her and a baby if she ever became pregnant, after pressing her to become more intimate in their relationship. She was crushed when he insisted that she get an abortion. She was raised in a Christian home with supportive parents, and even though she knew her parents would be disappointed that she had become pregnant, she knew she could get through it with the promised support of her boyfriend.

But when he gave her the money for the abortion and said that he would not be able to get off work to go with her, she felt like she had been punched in the gut...

In May of 1978, God put forth the plans for my life. I was given up for adoption when I was only three days young.  My adoptive parents were unable to have any children of their own, and were ecstatic that their dream of raising a child was about to come true.  God placed me in the arms of two very loving people who took me in and provided me with unconditional love, support and opportunities that shaped the foundation of the person that I am today. (Kristi is pictured at right)

I was raised in a Christian home, and attended a Christian school up to the fourth grade, which set the foundation of my faith.  Although I remained active in the youth group at church, I still struggled through school, both socially and emotionally.  I was not the social butterfly, and often enjoyed my time to myself.  I did not make friends easily.  This pattern would continue through high school and even into college.  I had a few close friends, but that too was difficult.  If I began to feel like I was being left out, as I often did, it would put me into a state of depression and panic.  I knew deep down what the real issue was, but I did not want to admit it, even to myself. I did not know how to handle the fact that I was adopted...
