SAGES OVER 70

Please join us in paying tribute to this year's outstanding Sages Over 70 honorees at a special recognition event next Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m., at The Temple for Performing Arts. The program begins at 6 p.m. We promise you'll be inspired--and have fun in the process.

In the meantime, get to know this year's Sages in the video by Screenscape Studios (click on the above image to view). And discover how they've influenced their friends, families and community in this story in the new issue of dsm.

Tickets to the recognition event are $50 per person, $25 for young professionals, and are available by clicking here. The event's proceeds will benefit the Sages Over 70 Fund, held at the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, our presenting partner. The fund helps support services and projects that address some of our community's most pressing needs as well as emerging opportunities. And if you can't attend next Tuesday night, you can still donate to the fund--in honor of a particular Sage or all of them--through the foundation's website.

We look forward to seeing you next Tuesday!

Fresh Market offers a variety of enticing, fresh seafood.

FIRST LOOK AT FRESH
By Wini Moranville

Fresh Market, the new gourmet grocer in West Des Moines, opened on Oct. 28, and I popped in that very afternoon.  Here are a few highlights:
  • I especially loved the self-serve fresh seafood bar. At first, $12.99 a pound sounds a bit pricey, but a container of one small serving each of wild Alaskan salmon salad, tuna seaweed salad and seafood antipasto made a fine and varied lunch for about $7.
  • Sure, lots of places have olive and antipasto bars, but this one's about three times longer than--and has about three times the variety of--any others I've seen in town.
  • The seafood counter might give Waterfront Seafood Market a run for its money: Wild-caught Alaskan cod, sockeye salmon, Florida grouper and swordfish all sparkled with the promise of freshness and high-quality.
  • I also thought the pre-prepped, ready-to-cook meats looked particularly promising. For example, the stuffed chicken breasts, like the spinach and feta option or cranberry and pecan choice, looked set to satisfy on those nights when you don't feeling like dining out (yet again!) but don't have a lot of energy to cook, either.
I'm certainly not going to forgo my other favorite grocers, including Whole Foods and Gateway (especially since both have infinitely better cheese counters). However, I'm impressed with Fresh, and I'm sure other food lovers in town will be too.

Fresh Market is at 5901 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines; 515-288-0525.

SENSATIONAL SOUND

Score one for the Des Moines Symphony, which will perform Prokofiev in its "Beyond the Score" concert Nov. 14 and 15 at the Des Moines Civic Center. Produced in collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the concert consists of a multimedia first half that will take you into Prokofiev's life in Russia during World War II. Intermission will be followed by his Fifth Symphony in its entirety.

If you didn't make it to the Symphony's season opener in September, you are in for an awesome surprise: The new state-of-the-art acoustic shell, a collaborative project of the Symphony and Des Moines Performing Arts, serves to create a fuller, richer, clearer sound. At the season opener, we were wowed by the difference it made.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 15. Tickets for "Beyond the Score" range from $15 to $60; buy them through the symphony's website.
