Prairie Breeze by Mac Hornecker (steel and ferro concrete) has been chosen for this year's Art Along the Trail.

Art in the 'burbs
Vibrant public art programs will enliven the landscape of both Clive and West Des Moines this summer:
- The city of Clive has chosen works by the following artists for this year's Art Along the Trail exhibit on the Greenbelt Trail: James Bearden, Sue Berkey, John Brommel, Hilde DeBruyne, Mac Hornecker and Anna Modeland. Each artist has received a $1,000 stipend, and when the display ends on Labor Day, the city will purchase one work for its public art collection. The exhibit will be dedicated at 5:30 p.m. May 21 at Wildwood Park, 15166 Wildwood Drive in Clive. To find out more about the Art Along the Trail program, click here.
- The city of West Des Moines and the West Des Moines Public Arts Commission are launching a new public art exhibit. Art on the Campus, which the city plans to make an annual event, will feature up to 12 sculptures by local artists. The works will be displayed from July 1 to Sept. 30 around the pond near the city's government buildings. Artists selected will receive a $1,000 stipend and also will have the chance to sell the sculpture displayed. If someone buys a work, 15 percent of the sales price will go to the West Des Moines Public Arts Commission to help fund future exhibits. For more information, call 222-3444.

New Fundraisers
Two local arts organizations are launching first-time fundraising events next month:
- Enjoy creative cuisine and support Metro Arts Alliance at A Taste of Spring, 6-9 p.m. April 6 at the Iowa Culinary Institute at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. Iowa Sen. Bill Dotzler will deliver the keynote address, and harpist Mary Foss of the Des Moines Symphony will perform. The dinner will mark the launch of Dining for the Arts, a quarterly dining experience at different metro-area locales that will celebrate the fusion of fine food, live entertainment and art. Tickets for Taste of Spring are $100 per person; for more information or tickets, click here or call 280-3222.
- Celebrate your "inner fool"--or the fool in those around you, whether a politician, an entertainer or your boss--at StageWest Theater Company's inaugural Fools Ball, 7-11 p.m. April 5 at West End Architectural Salvage in Des Moines. Costumes are welcome but not required. Entertainment will include Des Moines singer Bonne Finken and musical comedy star Scott Bradley of Chicago. Food, dancing, a photo booth and a live auction will round out the fun. Tickets range from $50 to $150, available by clicking here.
Firehouse Fun
Get a guided tour of the historic downtown firehouse--before it's renovated into the new home for the Des Moines Social Club (DMSC)--at Food for Thought, DMSC's annual fundraiser. The April 4 event will feature two options: a formal dinner with a three-course meal or a barbecue and beer party. An elevated stage will connect both parties, featuring live entertainment including music and interactive storytelling. Both events begin at 5 p.m. and converge for a dance party at 7:45 p.m. Supporters who make a donation will get to slide down the fire pole, paint a collaborative mural and knock down a wall. Admission is $100 for the dinner or $20 for the barbecue; get tickets at midwestix.com. Limited tickets are available.

Willis Lexus will match every dollar raised, up to $15,000, for Des Moines Performing Arts' Applause Series. This year, the series will give more than 50,000 students and teachers the opportunity to attend a performance at the Des Moines Civic Center during the school day. Everyone pays $1 per ticket, but the actual cost of the program is $6 per student. The Willis Drive for Kids raises funds to make up for that gap. The matching program runs through April 15.
