Moberg Gallery
|
New Fundraiser
W.A.M., a new event that combines wine, art and music with raising money, kicks off March 1 at Moberg Gallery. Each quarter, W.A.M. will benefit a different charity, with each event's art, drinks and music selected to reflect a particular theme.
"We're excited about mixing people with different interests, enjoying the finer things in life and supporting a great charity," says
Mike Barratt, who co-created the event with Jason Kiesau.

"The Wings of A Prayer" by Madai Taylor, 40x8x30 inches.
|
The inaugural W.A.M. will benefit Variety-The Children's Charity, and the fun will center on an "earth" theme, inspired by the current exhibit at Moberg from Iowa artist Madai Taylor, who uses mud to create abstract works. Barratt and Kiesau plan to serve wines with an "earthy" flavor, such as syrahs and pinot noirs, although they say there will be a selection to satisfy every palate. Musician Willie James Shay will perform bluegrass-inspired rock and jazz.
The event is 6-9 p.m. Tickets are $25; reserve through tikly. Attendance will be limited to 100 people.

Success Stories
'The Duty is There'
Presenting United Way of Central Iowa a check for $26,580,242 can be akin to a Publishers Clearing House moment. For 2012 United Way campaign chair Dan Houston, president of retirement, insurance and financial services for Principal Financial Group Inc., the rush of giving came from representing the entire community--and setting a new record in the process. His 46-person campaign cabinet and volunteer corps raised nearly $1.5 million more than last year's $25.1 million total, marking the second year in a row the annual campaign set a record.
Houston and co-chair Chris Littlefield, president and CEO of Aviva USA, announced the 2012 United Way of Central Iowa campaign results at a celebration last month at Principal.
Houston and his wife, Joanie, got involved in United Way in 1990 at the encouragement of Richard Prey, a retired Principal executive vice president. After decades of involvement, Houston was tapped for leadership. "The duty is there," Houston says. "Central Iowa has a long history of community leaders taking on the responsibility and always trying to beat the previous year's record."
Houston's role as co-chair was to call on the CEOs of the metro area's 13 largest companies to encourage increased employee contributions. "You know you have a precious 30 to 60 minutes to make your case," he says. "The goal is set on community needs. My responsibility was to go in there and make a compelling argument to John Deere, Nationwide, etc. Not one of those 13 said that they couldn't increase their contribution in 2013."
In fact, six companies raised $1 million or more in their 2012 United Way workplace campaigns: Aviva USA, DuPont Pioneer, Deere & Co., Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co., Principal Financial Group Inc. and Wells Fargo Inc.
"You hand that check to (United Way of Central Iowa board chair) Steve Chapman and to (United Way of Central Iowa President) Mary Sellers and you say, 'We are entrusting you with our reputation to make a difference.' The only way we can go out next year and ask for $27 million is that you have to be able to show you moved the needle."
