Could you be a Mentor?

MentorSET is now recruiting for Mentors and welcomes male mentors as well as female mentors. Being a MentorSET Mentor gives you the opportunity to develop your own management skills as well as great personal satisfaction. Being a Mentor is not a big commitment, and can be enlightening, inspiring and very rewarding.

You don't have to be at the top of your profession to be a MentorSET Mentor. Although we welcome more experienced Mentors, for many of our younger Mentees, a Mentor only needs a couple of years working experience in the Science, Engineering or Technology sectors. We are also delighted to hear from would-be Mentors with HR experience in these sectors or with coaching backgrounds.

You don't need any prior knowledge of mentoring, and training and support is FREE to members of the Women's Engineering Society and our partner organisations. If you would like to become a MentorSET Mentor, please contact us for more information at mentorset@wes.org.uk.

WES Student Groups: Glasgow University FemEng Update

2017 has been a busy year for  FemEng already! Here's a summary of what they've been up to.
FemEng has teamed up with Primary Engineer to participate in The Scottish Engineering Special Leaders Award. Members of their group have been paired up with Glasgow schools and will act as a source of engineering guidance for pupils in the next few months.
In January, they also hosted some girls from Ayrshire college for a campus tour - a great way to build connections with other institutions.

They've also started a mentoring system, pairing up younger year students with those from the same discipline in final years - and it's going great!

Promoting Women in STEM

According to recent findings from The WISE campaign, women made up only 21% of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) workforce and represented only 8% of engineering professionals in the UK in 2016.

This shortage not only affects economic growth, it also contributes to gender pay gaps with less women working in high paying STEM roles. With this in mind, Inside Government will be holding 'Promoting Women in Stem', an interactive strategy discussion at the Hallam Conference Centre on Thursday 30th March 2017.

Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss successful initiatives and learn from best practice case studies that have been successful in widening the pool of talent and helping to maximise the contribution of women to STEM. View the full agenda here.

Speakers on the day include:
Benita Mehra, President, Women's Engineering Society

Increasing Women in STEM Through Engagement and Outreach Work
  • Winning the WISE Campaign Award 2015 for its launch of National Women in Engineering Day to highlight the work of women in industry
  • Encouraging and promoting the education, study and application of engineering through the annual WES Student Conference, the Magnificent Women Outreach Project and supporting the creation of WES affiliated student groups at university
  • Highlighting the importance of outreach work in communities to increase representation of women in STEM
  • Raising awareness about careers in STEM for women from under-represented backgrounds through outreach work with schools
  • Supporting women to achieve their potential as engineers, applied scientists and leaders through MentorSet; a mentoring programme open to WES members and partner organisations
As a valued (member/reader) of WES, Inside Government would like to exclusively offer you the chance to attend the upcoming forum 'Promoting Women in STEM 2017' with a 20% discount. To claim your 20% discount, please contact Deborah Makinde on 0203 770 6648 or email Deborah.Makinde@insidegovernment.co.uk and quote 'STEM2017'.

Initiative to inspire women into engineering steps up for 2017

Women across Hull and the East Riding are being inspired to discover job opportunities in the manufacturing and engineering sectors through new videos commissioned by Green Port Hull in partnership with WES. Women into Manufacturing and Engineering (WiME), a Green Port Hull initiative supported by the Regional Growth Fund, aims to encourage women to choose a career in these industries.

WiME have created two videos based around a Q&A session with Dr Catherine Dobson, Senior Lecturer at the University of Hull's School of Engineering and Computer Science and Dr Sarah Peers, WES Vice President. These tell the story of WES and of Amy Johnson, the Hull aviator.

Amy Johnson - Last Flight Out

23 & 25 March 2017 | Spread Eagle Pub Theatre, Croydon

Jenny Lockyer explores the life of Amy Johnson, the pioneering aviator, in the first Croydonites commission.
On 5th January 1941, Amy Johnson was on a routine job for the Air Transport Auxiliary. Amy, an experienced, record making pilot, was delivering an Airspeed Oxford plane from Blackpool to Kidlington. While navigating her way around thick cloud she ran out of fuel and bailed out directly over the Thames Estuary. The dramatic attempt to rescue her by the HMS Haslemere failed and she was pronounced missing, presumed killed.

Amy had lived her life for adventure and was passionate about the future of aviation. She was just 37 years old when she died but she had achieved great things.  We meet Amy in a world of mixed memories, desires, wishes and ambitions. There's still so much she wants to do, and as she tells us about her life she sets about planning her ultimate dream adventure.

Take part in The Women's Sat Nav to Success Survey 2017

Extensive workplace and psychological research by The Women's Sat Nav to Success™ has identified the most powerful strategies for women's career success. The First Annual Women's Sat Nav to Success™ Survey, asks women to share their position on these strategies and to indicate how it impacts their engagement with their organisation as well as their career ambitions. These insights will provide employers and policy makers with a detailed picture of what they must focus on to finally deliver equal recognition, rewards and opportunities.

The more women that take part, the more powerful and precise the recommendations for positive change can be.
