Departure of WES Chief Executive Dawn Bonfield MBE

At the end of a successful and rewarding year as Chief Executive of the Women's Engineering Society Dawn Bonfield MBE is moving on to pastures new as from 13th October 2016. Dawn has worked tirelessly for WES for five years, first as a volunteer, then President before taking over the role of the WES Chief Executive a year ago. She is the founder of National Women in Engineering day, and several other recent initiatives at WES including the Sparxx programme and the Magnificent Women outreach activity.

Kirsten Bodley (pictured), former CEO of STEMNET, has agreed to act as interim lead to support WES in the transition between Dawn and to continue the process towards recruitment of a permanent Chief Executive and senior management team. Kirsten will provide the much needed external facing contact point for the Society.

Benita Mehra, WES President, noted "Everyone who comes into contact with Dawn recognises her talent in getting things done and her absolute commitment to women and engineering. The current trustees and council would like to thank Dawn for her transformational work with WES. We hope that we will continue to benefit from Dawn's energy and enthusiasm in the future as this 97-year old organisation looks forward to celebrating its centenary in 2019." She also added, "We would also like to welcome Kirsten Bodley on board. We are very lucky to be able to count on someone as experienced and as highly regarded as Kirsten to join us and support the Society."

The Female Face of Civil Engineering

The Female Face of Civil Engineering uses an engaging visual style to show personal profiles of ten women working in a wide range of roles in construction. It aims to encourage more 14-16 year old girls to study STEM subjects and consider a career in engineering.

By using role models of real women from varied backgrounds, The Female Face of Civil Engineering directly addresses the misconception by girls, and particularly their families, that engineering careers are "not for them".

The online version is at www.tffoce.net  and printed copies are being distributed via STEM organisations and schools from the start of the new academic year. Copies can be requested by email to tffoce@cgl-uk.com

The Female Face of Civil Engineering is published as an outreach initiative by CGL, a national ground engineering consultancy where 45% of the workforce are female.

Could your organisation be the focus of a case study on women in apprenticeships?

Learning and Work Institute is a research organisation that was recently formed by the merger of NIACE (the National Institute for Adult Continuing Education) and CESI (the Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion). We're a charity that is dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, full employment and inclusion.

We've been funded by UKCES (the UK Commission for Employment and Skills) to redesign and update our Employer Toolkit website (http://www.employer-toolkit.org.uk). The original website focused on helping employers to make apprenticeships accessible for individuals with disabilities, and our current project is aimed at expanding that focus to include gender, ethnicity, age and other under-represented groups. Our goal is to include case studies of employers with good practice in this area, in order to help inspire other employers and provide ideas of how they could improve.

If your organisation has experience of encouraging women to participate in apprenticeships in engineering, and you would be interested in being the focus of a case study, please contact me on corin.egglestone@learningandwork.org.uk or 0116 204 7076
