Advice for new students starting University this year

Starting a new course, making lots of life and career related decisions, moving to a new town or city and having to make new friends and fend for yourself are some of the things that affect over half a million young people as they start their university course each year. We know that whilst this is a very exciting time, a few words of wisdom from those already at university might give you a little bit of extra help so here they are:
  • Its never to early to get involved and start shaping your career. The sooner you do it, the sooner you become an example and hopefully an inspiration to young girls who will hopefully be following us into the industry!
  • Branching out of your speciality is also vital, it gives you a better understanding of engineering in a wider sense and you become a better engineer because of it. Having fantastic role models makes a massive difference.
  • Join as many groups and societies as you can, its a great way of making friends and gaining experience.
  • Practical experience gained through non-academic activities will impress employers and give them a reason to employ you and not someone else with the same education.
  • If you're struggling, talk to your peers about how they're finding the course, you might not be alone. Don't be afraid to ask your lecturer for help if you need it.
  • Check if your university has a WES affiliated student group, and if so, join it.
  • Finally - HAVE FUN!

Life after Graduation

Research leading international employers like AECOM, Arup, Schneider Electric, GKN, Thales and more at Where Women Work.

Summer Placements can help with your career decisions

"There are plenty of people on hand for assistance and advice. In fact, everyone I have encountered during my placements so far has been very friendly, very willing to help and very patient!"

Caroline Carslaw, SSE Wholesale Graduate Programe

A summer placement with SSE during her fourth year at university convinced Caroline that SSE was the right place to pursue her career. Although she trained as a Mechanical Engineer, she set out to use the two-year programme to build the broadest possible picture of the generation business.

Her placements have included work on pressure parts for thermal generation, onshore wind (electrical systems), hydro maintenance and preparation for a power station outage in Wexford. She's gained insights into balancing technical and commercial considerations in decision-making and enjoyed the opportunity to take responsibility for specific areas of major projects.

Her experiences at SSE have set her career on an upwards trajectory, having won the Rising Star Award at the 2016 Utility Week Start Awards, and also securing a place on the WES Young Member's Board. For more about careers with SSE have a look at the opportunities available and read about their current graduates here.

Registration is now open for CyberCenturion, the cyber security competition for 12-18 year olds

Led by leading cyber security company Northrop Grumman and facilitated by Cyber Security Challenge UK, CyberCenturion is the UK's first cyber defence competition for 12-18 year olds, and offers students the chance to experience simulated real world cyber security threats.

The competition is part of the company's commitment to promoting STEM education and growing the UK's pool of cyber talent. Now in its third year, CyberCenturion is attracting teams from schools around the UK to compete for a place in the national finals which will be held in London in April 2017.

CyberCenturion can be played in or outside the school environment, and only requires a responsible adult to manage the team. The competition begins with a series of rounds played virtually in which the teams are supported by their Team Leader who has access to training materials and live online support from the CyberCenturion HQ.

The top scoring teams are then invited to join the face-to-face national finals, where after four hours of intense competition against the clock, the winning team is announced.
All training materials are provided together with guidance and support for the team's leader, opening the door for many other organisations including parents to host independent groups of young people to enter the competition. To get through each virtual round, a good internet connection is the only pre-requisite.

We are currently looking for teams to enter the CyberCenturion competition for the 2016-17 academic year. Entry is free, and there is no limit to the number of teams that can enter. To enter or for more information visit the website here or contact Nikki Forrestall at nikki.forrestall@euro.ngc.com

The closing date for entries is 9th October 2016 so please enter soon to secure your place!

Could your organisation be the focus of a case study on women in apprenticeships?

Learning and Work Institute is a research organisation that was recently formed by the merger of NIACE (the National Institute for Adult Continuing Education) and CESI (the Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion). We're a charity that is dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, full employment and inclusion.

We've been funded by UKCES (the UK Commission for Employment and Skills) to redesign and update our Employer Toolkit website (http://www.employer-toolkit.org.uk). The original website focused on helping employers to make apprenticeships accessible for individuals with disabilities, and our current project is aimed at expanding that focus to include gender, ethnicity, age and other under-represented groups. Our goal is to include case studies of employers with good practice in this area, in order to help inspire other employers and provide ideas of how they could improve.

If your organisation has experience of encouraging women to participate in apprenticeships in engineering, and you would be interested in being the focus of a case study, please contact me on corin.egglestone@learningandwork.org.uk or 0116 204 7076

The Female Face of Civil Engineering

The Female Face of Civil Engineering uses an engaging visual style to show personal profiles of ten women working in a wide range of roles in construction. It aims to encourage more 14-16 year old girls to study STEM subjects and consider a career in engineering.

By using role models of real women from varied backgrounds, The Female Face of Civil Engineering directly addresses the misconception by girls, and particularly their families, that engineering careers are "not for them".

The online version is at www.tffoce.net  and printed copies are being distributed via STEM organisations and schools from the start of the new academic year. Copies can be requested by email to tffoce@cgl-uk.com

The Female Face of Civil Engineering is published as an outreach initiative by CGL, a national ground engineering consultancy where 45% of the workforce are female.
