MentorSET Event: Mentoring for Women in the Energy Sector
Mentoring for Women in the Energy Sector - Sponsored by Alex Chisholm, Permanent Secretary, Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
BEIS and partners are delighted to invite you to an event to raise the profile of the benefits of mentoring as an enabler in the growth of skills in the energy sector, with a particular focus on the development of females in the industry. There is currently a significant lack of diversity in the sector, an issue which Government and Industry are working together to address.
The event, which is the first of a series of UK-wide MentorSET events, will take place at Church House in London on 15th September between 8 and 10.30am.
If you want to find out more about MentorSET, WES's mentoring scheme for women in STEM or if you think you have the skills and can see the benefit that mentoring can do, please do get in touch and consider

Light Up The Ladies Bridge - 22 to 24 September
Part of Totally Thames 2016 : Take Me To The River.
This event will see a two day animation of Waterloo Bridge to highlight and celebrate the women who worked to rebuild the bridge during the Second World War. Labour records show there were as many as 25,000 women working in construction during the Second World War.
Our aim is to make visible the invisible and to encourage and inspire the much needed new generation of women engineers with an exciting variety of happenings in and around Waterloo Bridge.
At dusk, a collage of photographs and moving footage will be projected in epic proportions filling one side of the National Theatre's Lyttelton Theatre fly tower. During the day Film London's KinoVan will be parked on the Southbank by Waterloo Bridge from 10 am to 9 pm screening a programme of short films making visible & celebrating women's contribution to shaping the world.
Films from organisations such as the BFI, Film London, Women's Engineering Society, the IET, Thames Tideway plus others, will be programmed alongside regular screenings of The Ladies Bridge documentary.

Wikithon and the Digitised archives of The Woman Engineer
A few places are still available on a wikithon on the 11 October in London designed to make the histories of women engineers in the First World War more visible by putting them on Wikipedia. Sign up here.
This free one day collaborative project will look back at the role of women in engineering and technical disciplines during the First World War and beyond, and will start to bring out some of the stories documented in the newly digitised Women's Engineering Society archive.
Which leads to the wonderful news that the WES project to digitise and make available past copies of The Women Engineer journal is now complete! The IET has now made the digitised journals available online here.
This facility will be launched to the wider world on the 11 October, as part of the wikithon.

Visual Artist Looking for an Engineer
I'm a visual artists looking for some technical expertise on a project that I am currently developing. As with most of my projects they tend to address feminist issues and it is important for me that the construction and development is done by women.
I am making a large sculpture that includes over 70 pieces on Neon. The lights are controlled by a data feed via an Arduino. I need assistance creating a "device" that will read the data and then turn on the appropriate Neon lights.

IET calls for more female engineers to have their work published
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is calling for more female engineers to capitalise on their knowledge and expertise by having their work published in its world-renowned publications and information services.
The IET publishes a range of widely respected publications and information services for engineers and technicians, and is making the appeal due to the worryingly low number of female engineers contributing to its publications. For example, only 1% of the 800 editorial board members serving across the IET's journal portfolio are female.
The annual IET Skills and Demand in Industry survey shows that women have represented less than 10% of the engineering workforce in the UK for over a decade, so ensuring the work of outstanding female engineers is better represented in the world of engineering publishing has never been so important.
Naomi Climer, IET President, said: "Women are woefully underrepresented in engineering. In a profession with a serious skills shortage, this represents a problem for the economy as well as for diversity. It is therefore important that leading engineering publishers like the IET ensure gender diversity in their approach to publishing. That's why we are appealing to female engineers to share their expertise and experiences with their peers, not only as a way of boosting their own career progression but also to inspire the next generation of female engineers."

The RFAppathon and an App for WES Volunteers
Earlier this year, a small WES team submitted a proposal to the RFAppathon competition, based at University College London, for a new mobile phone app to empower women in STEMM.
The proposed WESLinks app is intended to link WES members to volunteering and personal development opportunities, such as speaking events, visiting schools, attending STEM events, taking part in WES projects. The app would allow WES members to look for ways to get involved and for WES partners to add opportunities. It would also prompt for direct and immediate as-it-happens feedback on impact on all concerned.
WES was delighted to be shortlisted for the award: out of over 100 proposals for new apps, 6 teams were invited to take part in a mentoring day at which a video of each idea was filmed and this, with further information, was used to decide on the winners.
Although we didn't win, we had a great day at the Awards event and our submission was also brought to the attention of Google after the event. WES is now looking for funding and partners to make the WESLinks happen.
