National Women in Engineering Day 2016 an amazing success

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in National Women in Engineering Day 2016. This was the third year of the event and we were extremely pleased to see so many organisations and individuals involved and we received some great coverage. The theme for 2016 was 'raising profiles' and we certainly achieved that!

The inaugural list of the Top 50 Women in Engineering was launched, in collaboration with the Telegraph and partners The IET, Scottish Power, Jaguar Land Rover, Prospect Union, Mars Petcare, SEMTA and BAE Systems.

You can read a full summary of this years impact or sign up for next year on our website nwed.org.uk

WES Young Members' Board Launched

On 23 June 2016, National Women in Engineering Day, the Women's Engineering Society (WES) announced the formation of their Young Members' Board (YMB). The WES YMB consists of twelve women under the age of 30 who are working, training or studying in an engineering field.

The aim of the YMB is to make WES more accessible to younger members, to reflect their concerns and priorities and provide input to the WES Council, allowing the voices of younger women engineers to be heard. The women making up the YMB will also act as role models for young women considering engineering and applied science.

The board will be supporting the "100 for 100" campaign, part of the WES Centenary activities. WES will ask one hundred companies to commit to a stretching set of actions to support diversity and inclusion in engineering during 2019, the one hundredth anniversary of WES. Government commits to a new vision for science, engineering and technical education

A long awaited report by Lord Sainsbury on technical education Post-16 Skills Plan has been launched this month. This report by an independent panel presents carefully argued proposals to improve technical education. It suggests clear dual academic and technical pathways of equal standing, where the technical pathway is being radically simplified while still linked closely to requirements for skills in industry. The Government have committed to implementing the recommendations.

WES warmly welcomes this report as one where diversity and the issues in STEM education post-16 and in technical apprenticeships are explicitly addressed within the report, as exemplified by the quote below, and by the extensive accompanying Technical education reform: assessment of equalities impacts document.

"We want to make sure that girls are able to choose from a broad range of careers and are not hindered by stereotypes. In particular, we want to encourage more women to go into science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) occupations, which carry a significant wage premium."

The report and proposals for overhaul of technical education is being welcomed by many in the engineering and technology sectors, as noted by The IET's E&T magazine and the IMechE Professional Engineering. And as the Science Council comment - this clearer vision for technical education is also good news for science. Read the latest blog from the Science Council here.

Calling all engineers to join the Inspiring Women Campaign

The national Inspiring Women campaign launched October 2013 and already has 20,000 amazing women ready to talk with girls in state schools about the 'job they do' and route they took. Our ambition is to see these women from a wide range of occupations going into state schools collectively talking to 500,000 young women. We already have 20,000 women so let's make it 30,000 by 2017.

And the winner is...Champions of national STEM competition announced

What will cities look like in 2050? How will they be powered to be vibrant, healthy and clean places to live? That's the question Shell asked secondary school students aged 11-14 through The Bright Ideas Challenge, its cross-curricular schools competition launched to inspire the scientists and engineers of tomorrow.

12 regional winners received £1,500 to supersize science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in their school, plus a tablet for each team member. In addition to the prize money, they were all invited to Make the Future London, Shell's festival of ideas and innovation, hosted at the iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The regional winners received VIP access to the exhibitions and activities on offer and even a photo opportunity with celebrity TV presenter and STEM champion Rachel Riley.

The highlight of the day was the The Bright Ideas Challenge awards ceremony, which saw the team from Queen Elizabeth's School in Barnet crowned national champions. They took home a total grand prize of £5,000 to improve STEM learning at their school. The students came up with the unique idea of installing transparent tubes filled with algae onto the sides of city buildings to instantly transform them into clean, energy-generating power stations!

With over 400 entries from 120 different schools, the competition was a huge success, sparking some truly incredible ideas that could shape the answers to the energy challenges facing future cities. Read all about the regional national winners' ideas at www.shell.co.uk/brightideaschallenge

Think your school could rise to the challenge in future years? Email ShellSchoolsTeam@hopscotchconsulting.co.uk and for more information on forthcoming competitions.
