Top 50 Women in Engineering List

The Top 50 Women in Engineering List (WE50) is open to all women in Britain who work in the engineering sector, and is being run in partnership with the Women's Engineering Society (WES), key employers and associated organisations.

In the UK, engineering has an image problem. In Europe's league table of women participating in engineering, Britain comes rock bottom. Just 9pc of our engineers are women, and while much is being done to address this imbalance there is much more to do.

Projections suggest that the UK will be short of thousands of qualified engineers in the next decade. Without harnessing the talents available from both genders, there is little hope of filling all of the roles that are needed by industry.

The WE50 list will be judged and chosen by industry experts from WES, and is sponsored by industry heavyweights including BAE Systems, Scottish Power, Jaguar Land Rover and Mars Petcare, as well as skills and training experts Semta and the Prospect union. All of these organisations are keen to see the gender landscape of engineering change over the coming years.

Anyone can nominate women working in engineering at any level, no matter what their experience; that could be a friend, a colleague or yourself.

The hope is that these nominations will inspire the next generation of engineers by helping celebrate those currently excelling in the industry. You can be part of that process: make your nomination here by midnight on Monday 23 May. Further guidance on nominations can be found here.

CPD and Your Engineering Career
As many of you will be aware, in 2013, The Engineering Council announced an aspiration that by January 2017 all Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs) will have introduced a Policy of random reviewing of Professionally Active Registrants' CPD Returns. The IET and other PEIs have done this, with the IET opening it up to ALL members and it is now less than 12 months until the Policy goes live and random reviewing of members' 2016 CPD will begin.

CPD is an integral part of your Engineering career: whether undertaking training, work experience, academic study, volunteering or attending events and seminars, we all need to maintain  and improve our knowledge base.  Start recording your CPD now using Career Manager or your PEI's system.
And come along to the WES CPD conference to kick start your development.

The Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers (WCSIM)

Message from John Caunt.
Hello, have you ever considered joining us before? Perhaps you hadn't realised that our livery is not only open to Instrument makers but to Instrument users, technicians and other related industries.

It was recently said to me that we Livery Companies are very good at promoting our past but not necessarily our future.

We at WCSIM are intent on producing a modern livery that serves not only its members who have a wide spectrum of ages but the Scientific Instrument Industry as a whole.

The Livery Company of Scientific Instrument Makers is holding a recruitment evening on June 6th near London Bridge from 6pm until 8pm.
Exciting times for us, and we invite you to be a part of it. You will find more on our web-site www.WCSIM.co.uk,

"Down With Drudgery" - In Praise of Caroline Haslett

In a recent article with Womanthology, the WES Chief Executive, Dawn Bonfield talked about the influences of WES in the past, including the first Chief Executive - Caroline Haslett. Caroline wanted to reduce the drudgery for women in the home through encouraging the use of electricity. This would have the effect of freeing up their time to enter the labour market.

I'm an Engineer, Get me out of here

I'm an Engineer is an online X-Factor style competition for engineers, where students are the judges! It's running this June (Monday 13th - Friday 24th).

For two weeks engineers will answer questions, and take part in live text chats with students all over the UK. Students vote for their favourite engineer to win £500 to spend on more STEM engagement.

The online event gives all students a voice and encourages questions they might not be confident asking in front of the whole class. Students see that engineers are people just like them, while being introduced to the wide range of possibilities in STEM careers; it's not all hard hats and white coats.

Engineers apply by Monday 2nd May at imanengineer.org.uk/engineers
Teachers apply by Sunday 24th April at imanengineer.org.uk/teachers

And if you're a SCIENTIST and wish to take part, visit I'm a Scientist Get me out of here!
