New CEO for WES
We are delighted to announce that Dawn Bonfield has been appointed as the new Chief Executive for the Women's Engineering Society, after gaining approval for the appointment from the Charity Commission. 

Dawn is WES's first CEO in its recent history, and is looking forward to continuing the work that she started whilst President. Please do contact Dawn if you would like to get more involved with WES as a sponsor, a member or a volunteer. 
 
Helen Cavill Scoops the WES Prize at the IET's Young Women Engineer Award Ceremony
 
Helen Cavill, Process Improvement Manager at M&H Plastics, has won the WES Prize 2015 at the IET's Young Woman Engineer Awards.

Helen has been a STEM Ambassador for the last nine years, runs Saturday Science Masterclasses has been on the organising committee of the Lowestoft Interschool Maths Challenge since its creation.

Waterloo Bridge 70th Year Anniversary

On 10 December 1945 Waterloo Bridge, now nicknamed 'The Ladies Bridge' was officially opened by Herbert Morrison, and 70 years later we continue to celebrate the women who played such a significant role in building this iconic Bridge. 

In 2015 to celebrate National Women in Engineering Day Historic England relisted the bridge to recognise its historical significance. Read more here.

What does exPRession offer? 
Our bespoke exPRession media training workshop provides candidates with insight regarding how the media works and what journalists are looking for. It provides them with new skills to help them deal with difficult questions and shows them how to take control of challenging situations.
 
What is achieved? 
Each delegate undertakes practical exercises based on real life scenarios tailored specifically to their areas of expertise. This means that participants are operating in familiar territory and can focus on learning to manage the interview while building their confidence in a safe environment.
 
exPRession equips spokespeople to speak intelligently and appropriately in any given scenario that they are likely to find themselves in.

New Podcast Features Ladies' Bridge & Seeks Untold Stories

The hidden history of women behind Waterloo Bridge features in the latest episode of a new podcast celebrating women engineers. The Ladies' Bridge is episode two of Transformer. Sandi Rhys Jones reveals Waterloo Bridge's secret and explains why it's relevant to today's engineers. Click here for the podcast.

Transformer has been set up by two journalists to bring alive to the public the reality of working as an engineer and to share women's aspirations in a novel medium. 
 
"We are baffled why there are proportionately so few women engineers," says presenter Hester Abrams. "What's going on? What is keeping women and engineering apart?"
 
Transformer wants to feature stories engineers don't seem to be getting across to the public. Tweet them ideas and comments @rivetingaudio. You can subscribe on iTunes, or player.fm, with more podcatchers coming soon.
 
Women engineers in the Great War and after - save the date!

23 April 2016: One day public engagement event at the Dana Centre, Science Museum, London. 'Women Engineers in the Great War and after'  .
 
This free one day collaborative conference will look back at the role of women in engineering and technical disciplines during the First World War and beyond, and will start to bring out some of the stories documented in the newly digitised Women's Engineering Society archive. 

In collaboration the University of Leeds, the University of Leicester, the team at the IET archive, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and many others contributors, the day will be an informative, interactive and entertaining event which will set the stage for further collaboration on this important and as yet largely unexplored part of our heritage.

Consultancy and Engineering Awards 2016

The new Consultancy and Engineering Awards have been launched for 2016.  

The awards are designed to showcase success and best practice within the natural and built environment for the engineering and consultancy community globally.

We can't believe that NWED has won another trophy! 

WES is now the proud owner of two awards; the most recent being from the Association Awards 2015 for the Best Social Media Campaign. NWED reached so many people this year and has made us proud in so many ways that the awards are simply the icing on the cake. We're already planning for 2016 to go out to even more current and aspiring engineers to help inspire them.

2015 WES Student Conference - The Best Yet!

This year saw the best student conference to date with over 120 students and 26 presenters. The conference included keynote speeches by our headline sponsors; presentations in electronics; academia; energy and alternative engineering; an icebreaker session and training workshops.

Immortalising Past President Amy Johnson at Herne Bay

2016 is the 75th anniversary of the tragic and untimely death of a WES Past President and fantastic female role model. 
 
This would be a permanent memorial to one of Britain's pioneers of flight.

The Ultimate STEM challenge
The Ultimate STEM Challenge is a new competition brought to you by BP, the Science Museum and STEMNET. 

The competition asks teams of two to four students aged 11 to 14 from across the UK to put their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills to the test and win some fantastic prizes, including an invitation to a celebratory event at the Science Museum in London, £500 for their school and Science Museum goodies. The categories, based around the theme of increasing energy efficiency are: Streamlined Ships, Better Buildings and Trim Turbines.

Keep the entries coming for the Little Big Awards

The Little Big Awards is a challenge that explores the concept of the 'internet of things' and what is possible when you connect everyday objects like the microwave or your central heating to the internet. There will also be a separate prize for innovative use of a BBC micro:bit as part of the project. 

Key stage 3 students are invited to show us how they think life could be made better by connecting everyday things together. Why not register your interest in being a mentor via the Little Big Awards website or encourage a school or STEM club to take part?
