In association with the Ford PWN (Professional Women's Network) the £1000 cash prize is to be awarded to a female student in her first year of a STEM degree, who can demonstrate how they are inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and technologists.
Entries will be accepted between September 1st and November 6th 2015.  An entry form plus T&C's can be found here

White House Host First-Ever Demo Day

On Tuesday, August 4 the White House hosted a Demo Day where we showcased the wide-ranging talents of innovators from across the country and campaigned for more diversity in engineering. Unlike a private-sector Demo Day, where entrepreneurs "pitch" their ideas to funders, innovators from around the country joined President Obama to "demo" their individual success stories and show why we need to give every American the opportunity to pursue their bold, game-changing ideas.

Awardees receive £60,000 funding and benefit from training and mentoring from some of the UK's most successful technology entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Engineering Apprenticeships Vacancies Available for Girls at Kirklees College

Kirklees College has a very successful engineering apprenticeship programme with 75 - 100  apprenticeship vacancies in various engineering disciplines each year. For September 2015, they still have 17 vacancies available and are hoping to recruit more girls.

These vacancies are with local Kirklees and Calderdale employers and in many cases the employers are happy to sponsor an apprentice onto HNC then a degree, consequently, employers are looking more and more at candidates who have good GCSE's and/or A levels. They believe, that they have every right to compete for those good academic school leavers that are usually targeted by the Universities.

For more information about the engineering apprenticeships vacancies, please contact Andrew Roberts ARoberts@KirkleesCollege.ac.uk

Girl Geek Senior Members' Lunch

We are organising a get-together for those of us involved in WES for more decades than we care to admit! No longer interested in your CV and career development - more interested in a nice meal with wine and a chat with old friends (some not so old, some just feel old...)?

Do you fancy lunch on 10 October in Birmingham? We could meet for coffee at about 11, then lunch at 12.30 before supporting WES at the AGM at 2pm. We may even carry on afterwards at some nearby hostelry. Please contact Sue Bird to let us know if you are interested and we will set about organising something suitable.

Building the Future, Shaping our World competition

Building the Future, Shaping our world is a global engineering competition for groups of up to 6 girls aged 11-18. As a competitor you will have to design a sporting venue for your local area using either a derelict or brownfield site. Each member of the winning team will receive an iPad mini 3.

The competition requires you to consider many different aspects of building and so requires many different skill sets. Entrants have until Friday 9th October 2015.
