As part of our goal to get more girls into engineering, we've launched a new initiative - Sparxx. The aim of Sparxx is to provide news, events competitions, freebies and much more to girls who show an interest in CRESTA (Creativity, Engineering, Science, Technology and Art) by providing a targeted stream of communication to inspire girls to create the future they are capable of.

We are not planning to provide new content or any new activities, but instead to compile activities and information provided by you. If you would like to feature your CRESTA events, competitions, games or quizzes, please email relevant content to us with the subject line Website Content.

Closing the Gender Pay Gap

The Prime Minister has launched a wide-ranging public consultation seeking views on what more we can do to accelerate the rate of progress in closing the gender pay gap. This consultation will inform the development of new regulations requiring employers in Great Britain to publish the difference between the pay of men and women employees.

We are also seeking views on wider action that can be taken to inspire girls and young women, modernise workplaces and support older working women.

The consultation can be found here

Innovation needs gender diversity #makeadifference

Digitisation of the WES Journal The Woman Engineer

We are pleased to inform readers that we have now reached our funding target and have commenced digitisation of the 96 year old WES journal The Woman Engineer. The archive collection of this journal is held at Savoy Hill House, the archive of the IET.
The journals contain a wealth of knowledge not only of women in engineering but the journey of engineering in the UK since World War 1. The early journals also contain technical papers by female engineers. This historically significant archive will be digitised in such a way as to be searchable by keyword.

Britain's Hidden Talent: Women Engineers

Susan Marling asks why the UK has the lowest proportion of female engineers in Europe. In 2014, only 6% of the UK's engineers were women.

The Global Diversity List (GDL)

The aim of the Global Diversity List (GDL) is to create the definitive global diversity standard that covers every strand of diversity in every country in the world. The diversity profession has developed organically as a branch of Human Resources over the last two decades. As yet, there are no formal qualifications required to be a diversity professional. The creation of the GDL addresses this fundamental weakness in the profession.

Nominations are now invited for the categories within the Global Diversity List 2015. The closing date for nominations is 31st July. The definitive Global Diversity List will be announced on 31st October.

Girl Geek Senior Members' Lunch

We are organising a get-together for those of us involved in WES for more decades than we care to admit! No longer interested in your CV and career development - more interested in a nice meal with wine and a chat with old friends (some not so old, some just feel old...)?

Do you fancy lunch on 10 October in Birmingham? We could meet for coffee at about 11, then lunch at 12.30 before supporting WES at the AGM at 2pm. We may even carry on afterwards at some nearby hostelry. Please contact Sue Bird to let us know if you are interested and we will set about organising something suitable.

Building the Future, Shaping our World competition

Building the Future, Shaping our world is a global engineering competition for groups of up to 6 girls aged 11-18. As a competitor you will have to design a sporting venue for your local area using either a derelict or brownfield site. Each member of the winning team will receive an iPad mini 3.

The competition requires you to consider many different aspects of building and so requires many different skill sets. Entrants have until Friday 9th October 2015.
