WES Conference, London

There are only a few days to go before the Women's Engineering Society annual conference on women in engineering, and this year the theme is Women Returners. We are losing skills and resources by not retaining our women engineers, but more than that we are not utilising these engineers as our ambassadors in the community. How can we maximise their value and talents during their career breaks, and how can we use this engagement as a win win situation to ensure that women return to engineering afterwards? Come and find out at the WES conference on National Women in Engineering Day, 23 June, in London.

This conference is aimed at individual women engineers as well as companies wanting to know more about current best practices in developing and retaining women employees.

Conference Themes:

*             Engineering Returnships

*             The role of the Professional Engineering Institutions

*             Corporate Best Practice around Career Breaks

*             Retention and Development

*             Practical Support for Career Breaks

*             How to turn Career Breaks into Career Opportunities

*             School Gate SET - maximising your engineers as community and school ambassadors

*             Extended Career Breaks and how to support them

Speakers include Jo Swinson, Kate Bellingham, Jenny Young (RAEng), Catherine Lewis (Goldman Sachs), Katie Perry (Daphne Jackson Trust), Julianne Miles (Women Returners), Julie Thornton (Thames Tideway), Clem Herman (Open University), Sue Ferns (Prospect Union), Vicky Evans (Arup), Saphina Sharif (Atkins), Chantelle Ludski (Hyder Consulting), Rachel Morris (Laing O'Rourke), Katy Ghahremani (Make Architects), Trudie Savage and Alison Green (Airbus), Anna Blackwell (National Grid) and Oliver Black (My Family Care). The conference sessions will be chaired by Meg Munn, Philippa Oldham (IMechE) and Kim Pamplin (P&G).

In parallel sessions we will be offering some Continued Professional Development on Personal and Career Development from two experienced coaches in Susan Room and Carol Stewart, and we will be offering WES members the chance to learn more about the Magnificent Women schools outreach programme, and how they can be involved in this in the future.

We hope that you can join us for a stimulating day. Further details can be found here: www.wes.org.uk/returning.

Addressing the Women in STEM Funding Gap

We would like to invite you to an evening workshop to discuss the funding crisis amongst groups that work with and for women in STEM and to devise a practical plan to financially support the essential work being done by grassroots and industry-focused groups.

When: Thursday 18 June 2015, 6:30pm-9pm

Where: Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, London, WC1R 4RL  (nearest tube: Holborn)

For many years, we've heard about how the number of girls and women studying and taking up careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) is woefully low. And for years, there have been calls to action, pleas for something to be done.

We're now at a point where there are many grassroots and industry-focused groups are working incredibly hard to support, inspire and celebrate women in STEM. But despite their success, they all lack one thing: Funding.

This evening workshop will tackle this problem head-on. Using a facilitated, open space format, attendees will drive the discussion, defining their own agenda and then breaking into groups for in-depth conversations, before finally sharing ideas with the group.

If you would like to attend, please sign up on our Eventbrite page, and please do feel free to pass this invitation on to anyone else you feel would be interested, especially representatives of large businesses, corporate social responsibility experts, philanthropists, funders, grant-givers and charitable institutions.

Mass Photocall and World Record Attempt

Join 100 Years of Women in Transport to celebrate National Women in Engineering Day 2015 and break a Guinness World Record

We are delighted to be celebrating this year's National Women in Engineering Day with a short event at London's iconic Horse Guards Parade on Tuesday 23 June from 08:15 - 09:00am.

The event, which will open with an address from Sir Peter Hendy, Commissioner of Transport for London, will involve a mass photocall and will culminate with a Guinness World Record attempt, which is being kindly sponsored by Telent.

This year we are 'high fiving' the amazing achievements of women in engineering and technology and showcasing the exciting and hugely diverse roles they undertake. As such, we will attempt to break the World record for 'the most people performing a jumping high five simultaneously'. For this we need as many people as possible working in engineering and technology roles to take part.

A film crew will be capturing all the action and interviewing representatives from across the engineering and technology worlds. We will then use the footage to produce a short film which will be made available to industry and used as an engagement piece for schools.

Ultimately this is about raising the profile of engineering and technology careers for women on as large a scale as possible, by showcasing the vast array of roles that a career in engineering and technology has to offer. As such we are looking for all those working in engineering and technology fields to attend, not just engineers.

The success of this event relies on gathering as many people as possible, so please do everything you can to help to spread the word!

You do not need to bring anything along to the event other than yourself, all that we ask is that you let us know that you are coming by registering here

Yfactor Survey

Better growth involves innovation. Innovation involves diversity. The worldwide Yfactor survey is launched for the second year by Global Contact in partnership with international organizations such as OECD, UNESCO and the eSkills for Jobs campaign (European Commission) and international media (France Media Monde, TF1, RTL) in order to promote gender diversity in STEM.

Yfactor is an online survey which will be accessible until 21st of July 2015 here

It is designed to be easily accessible on a PC, tablet or smartphone. The survey includes questions on the following topics:

- Education: Assessing and comparing by age and gender the orientation criteria impacting educational choices. Contradictions between attitudes towards technology as well as technology jobs, resulting from stereotypes, are being assessed.

 - Employment: Comparing the situation of men and women at work (sectors of activity, function, reporting levels, responsibilities) and assessing the impact of gender policies, as well as dual career couple practices, on work life balance and motivation.

- Diversity added value and well-being: Assessing the added value of diverse teams regarding performance, customer satisfaction and well-being at work. Gender analysis of key indicators, identified with the help of OECD's Better Life Index
