23 June 2015, London

The Women's Engineering Society 2015 conference is focusing on the theme of women returning to engineering. Evidence has shown that many qualified women in STEM are not returned to the engineering sector after a career or maternity break, and these are skills that we can ill afford to lose when we face such a massive skills gap in the coming years. Not only are we losing out on these skills in engineering - skills that are often enhanced in many ways during the breaks - but we are failing to utilise the links that these women have with their local communities, schools, and other parents/influencers. With a bit of thought, organisation and encouragement we could mobilise this untapped resource and either reintroduce these skilled women to the engineering sector, or use them as ambassadors for our profession in other ways. This conference explores the opportunities and some of the best practices that are out there to access and utilise this neglected resource.

During the day we will hear about the STEM survey that highlighted the barriers that women face in returning to work after a break from Sue Ferns of Prospect Union; from Catherine Lewis of Goldman Sachs about women 'Returnship' programmes; we hear from Katie Perry on the Daphne Jackson Trust and ways to reintroduce women to science careers; Clem Herman
on the Open University STEM Returners online course; Kate Bellingham will talk about her exciting new venture

School Gate SET and Jenny Young from the Royal Academy of Engineeringwill talk about what Professional Engineering Institutions are doing to support their women members through the RETURN programme. In the afternoon we hear from companies including Arup, Atkins, Airbus, Make Architects, Laing O'Rourke, National Grid and Hyder Consulting who will give us their case studies about how they have supported their employees, and from Thames Tideway Tunnel and Women Returners on the first UK engineering returnship programme. The final panel session will allow the audience to discuss the issues with panel members who have spoken during the day. The conference sessions will be chaired by Meg Munn, Philippa Oldham (IMechE) and Kim Pamplin (P&G).

In parallel sessions we will be offering some Continued Professional Development on Personal and Career Development from two experienced coaches in Susan Room and Carol Stewart, and we will be offering WES members the chance to learn more about the Magnificent Women schools outreach programme, and how they can be involved in this in the future.

We hope that you can join us for a stimulating day. Please register here

Be Part of the Change

As part of our NWED 2015 campaign, we have launched a new Donate page where you can create your own fundraising page or make one-off donations via text/PayPal. We rely solely on grants and donations to operate NWED and to print our great resource packs for schools and organisations. Last year, NWED was launched without any funding, but nevertheless has had a significant impact on diversity in schools and the wider community. However, for 2015 we would like to widen the impact of this day even further with your help. Whether it's £1 or £100, we welcome every penny that you contribute towards NWED and will ensure that it is used to help promote engineering to more girls across the UK.

Register your NWED Event

Don't forget to let us know your plans for NWED 2015 by registering your engineering-related event on our website, so we can advertise the event and promote it via social media.

Support NWED 2015 with Thunderclap

As we get closer to NWED 2015, we've decided to launch a Thunderclap campaign, the first-ever crowdspeaking platform that allows you to pledge a Tweet or Facebook message all on the same time and day, in order to amplify the message of NWED and gain a larger social reach. The campaign will allow us to get the word out there on NWED and help bridge the gap between women and engineering, encouraging more girls across the UK to consider engineering as a profession.  But we can only achieve this with your support.

All you need to do to get involved with our Thunderclap campaign, is click this link  and then select SUPPORT WITH FACEBOOK, SUPPORT WITH TWITTER or SUPPORT WITH TUMBLR. Then on 23 June National Women in Engineering Day, everyone who has signed up will automatically have the same message posted on their social media pages. Please get the word out there to all of your family and friends.

Engineering Imagination- Sunday 21st June 2015

Imagination can take you anywhere.

Imagination, curiosity and creativity has given us electricity, steam engines, cars, planes, medicine and mobile phones. Somebody had to dream of these things before they were made real. An imaginative child will become an imaginative adult, likely to create, to invent. Likely to change the world. To celebrate National Women in Engineering Day we're opening our doors at Winter Gardens, Sheffield City Centre for loads of activities that explore science, engineering and most of all imagination. From candyfloss to construction, come along, meet real engineers and find out about how engineering shapes the world around you.

The Outbox is for girls aged 11 22, who have interests in the STEM fields and/or STEM ideas that they want to develop. Our basic eligibility is:

● You must be an EU resident

● You must be proficient in the English language

● You must be female

● You must have an excitement and curiosity for one or more of the STEM fields

Do I need to have a fully formed STEM idea?

No. There will be a mixture of girls and young women in the house at various stages of experience and knowledge of the STEM fields. Some will have fully formed ideas and may have even developed products or services that they are ready to launch as a start up business. Others will simply have excitement, enthusiasm and a keen curiosity for STEM and will want to be in the house to explore these interests in depth. The most important thing, is that you are excited and curious about STEM and want to learn more.

How much does it cost?

Outbox Incubator is FREE . Travel during the programme will also be covered, as well as meals while you are with us.

Where and when does the Outbox happen?

Outbox Incubator will take place in south London, in a large 12 bedroom house. It starts on the 27th July and runs until the 5th of September 2015.

What are the different types of stay in the house?

The house will be a mixture of day participants and residents. Day participants will predominantly be girls who live in London and will make the trip each day to take part in the activities. For day participants, we ask for a minimum commitment of one week, preferably a Monday to a Sunday. Residents will be girls who are travelling from outside London who will sleep in the house for a minimum of two weeks at a time.

*We would love for participants to come for the whole 6 weeks, no matter where you are from!

But we know that this may not be possible as it is summer break and you may have other things to do, we just want you to know that the option is there*

What will happen in the house?

Over the 6 weeks we will be running a variety of workshops, hosting inspirational speakers, making products, playing games, eating some really good food and having loads of fun!

The incubator will be split into two phases. The first phase is called Germination and will last 3 weeks: this is where we will explore topics such as ideation, concept development, design, and 'telling your story'.

The second phase is called Incubation , and the topics we will cover will be around your business idea: building your business, product development, marketing, finance, user experience and more.

*In between all of this amazing stuff, we will be having day trips like rock climbing and Go Ape! We also have a range of 'Down time' activities happening like movie nights, yoga mornings, cook offs and so much more!*

Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship applications open for 2015

  • Women in Science & Engineering Scholarship aims to boost young female participation in technology and engineering
  • Winners receive £1000 per year towards their studies plus mentoring support from key women within the industry
  • Third year marques WISE & Jaguar Land Rover's commitment to increasing the number of female engineers in the UK

Whitley, UK, April 2015: WISE and Jaguar Land Rover today open the 2015 Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship, aimed at young women planning a career in technology and engineering in the UK.

Launched in 2013 by Zara Phillips, the Scholarship is open to those embarking on or currently undertaking an engineering, maths or physics degree course or apprenticeship in the UK this year. The funding programme aims to boost female participation in these disciplines, with the winners receiving £1,000 per year for their studies (up to three years) and professional mentoring to support their path into engineering.

As in 2014, the scholarship programme has been expanded to create two separate awards - one for an undergraduate and the other for an apprentice.

Last year's winner for the Apprentice Award was Ruby Holmes, currently working through her Advanced Technical apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce. She commented: "I felt honoured to be awarded the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship in 2014 and it is great to see it open again for 2015, giving a helping hand to more young women like me. The programme provides fantastic support, both from a financial and mentorship viewpoint, and I am personally really excited to be working as an ambassador, encouraging more girls to choose amazing careers in the industry."

Ruby's mentor and WISE Young Women's Board Member, Hannah Goodall, Senior Engineer [Switches & Crossings] for Network Rail comments: I'm really looking forward to regularly meeting with Ruby to discuss her career aspirations. Winning the Range Rover Evoque WISE scholarship so early into her career is such an achievement. I believe mentoring relationships have a positive impact on career development. I hope to be able to support and challenge Ruby, introduce new ideas and discuss positive steps Ruby can take going forward."

Whilst the number of young women embarking on a technology or engineering course in the UK is on the rise, there are still significant challenges for the female engineers of the future. Chloe Pickford-Adams, who was delighted to be a winner of the Undergraduate scholarship in 2014, says: "I hope to dedicate time throughout my engineering career to an ambassadorial role in order to inspire others to explore a career in engineering".

Currently women account for less than 10%* of professional engineers in the UK and the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship highlights Jaguar Land Rover's commitment to increasing the number of female engineers in the UK.

Nicci Cook, Jaguar Land Rover Senior HR Manager Product Development, said: "Since the inaugural year we have seen some amazing winners come through the Scholarship, and we are delighted to be running the programme for a third year. Jaguar Land Rover is constantly striving to encourage more young women into the industry and through programmes such as the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship we hope to maintain the UK's reputation as a centre of excellence for engineering for a long time to come."

The selection process will include an application form and interview. The closing date for applications is 28 July 2015. The winner will be announced in London at the prestigious Annual WISE Awards & conference on 12 November 2015. You can apply for the scholarship online
