Kickstarter Project to Digitise WES Journal

The Kickstarter project has got off to a great start and only has a few days left to run for us to raise enough funds to digitise archived copies of the WES Journal.

Support our Kickstarter Project to Digitise the WES Journal from 1919 to 2004 by donating here.

The Women's Engineering Society (WES) was started in 1919 and has been producing its Journal "The Woman Engineer" quarterly since 1919. The journals are currently held in the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) archives.

The journals contain a wealth of knowledge not only of women in engineering but the journey of engineering in the UK since World War 1. The early journals also contain technical papers by female engineers. It is important that we do not lose the records of these WES role models and we maintain their achievements for future generations.

Since 2004 the journals have been digitised and are available to download here. The IET also digitised the first journal for WES.

In 2019 WES will be 100 years old and we have started a project to catalogue the history of WES; digitising the journals is one part of the project.

All digitised journals will be made available online to download.

The money donated will pay to digitise the journals.

Celebrate National Women in Engineering Day, 23rd June 2015

NWED Leaflet is available to download by clicking here

National Women in Engineering Day was set up by the Women's Engineering Society (WES) to celebrate its 95th anniversary.

The idea behind National Women in Engineering Day is to encourage all groups (Governmental, educational,
corporate, Professional Engineering Institutions, individuals and other organisations) to organise their own events in
support of the day, and link them together for maximum impact through the use of the NWED logo, corresponding
website, and supporting resources.  - See more here

As part of our 2nd Annual National Women in Engineering Day (NWED), we are hoping to expand on our success from last year and establish NWED as a bigger and better day! If you would like help planning an event please contact us and let us know what you are doing.

Our resource pack, which can be downloaded from the website has some great links and careers advice for budding Engineers.

Keep up to date with NWED on Twitter @nwed2015 and on the website

Be Part of the Change

As part of our NWED 2015 campaign, we have launched a new Donate page where you can create your own fundraising page or make one-off donations via text/PayPal. We rely solely on grants and donations to operate NWED and to print our great resource packs for schools and organisations. Last year, NWED was launched without any funding, but nevertheless has had a significant impact on diversity in schools and the wider community. However, for 2015 we would like to widen the impact of this day even further with your help. Whether it's £1 or £100, we welcome every penny that you contribute towards NWED and will ensure that it is used to help promote engineering to more girls across the UK.

Register your NWED Event

Don't forget to let us know your plans for NWED 2015 by registering your engineering-related event on our website, so we can advertise the event and promote it via social media.

Volunteering Opportunities

With the re-launch of the ever popular Magnificent Women and Their Flying Machines outreach activity this year, we have some great volunteering opportunities available to those interested in engaging more girls with engineering. To help promote the outreach activity, we have secured a stall at Big Bang  Yorkshire and Humber at Doncaster Racecourse and need enthusiastic volunteers who would be willing to organise and run the project. This is a great opportunity to engage with the public and promote the valuable contribution of early pioneering women engineers. A training session will be organised prior to the event to provide all the necessary support and training in order to successfully run the outreach activity on the day.

Engineering Women: Are they Returning?

23 June 2015
1 Birdcage Walk, London

The Women's Engineering Society 2015 conference is focusing on the theme of women returning to engineering. It has been estimated that 22,000 qualified women have not returned to the engineering sector after a career or maternity break, and these are skills that we can ill afford to lose when we face such a massive skills gap in the coming years. Not only are we losing out on these skills in engineering - skills that are often enhanced in many ways during the breaks - but we are failing to utilise the links that these women have with their local communities, schools, and other parents/influencers. With a bit of thought, organisation and encouragement we could mobilise this untapped resource and either reintroduce these skilled women to the engineering sector, or use them as ambassadors for our profession in other ways. This conference explores the opportunities and some of the best practices that are out there to access and utilise this neglected resource.

Conference Chair: Meg Munn MP

Session 1:

Can you help? Volunteers sought

Volunteers are sought for a schools outreach event at Burgess Hill School for Girls, Keymer Rd, West Sussex RH16 1LH on 1 July 2015

They are seeking 3-4 female engineering role models who can be allocated to small groups during the workshop.  Ideally the engineers could bring some 'props' (eg photos, video clips, models, materials etc) to help describe their work to the students.  They want to get across the idea that engineering is for people who are imaginative, artistic, practical, visionary, questioning, enthusiastic, caring...... to combat the commonly held misconceptions!

Please contact Katren Bishop, or call 01444 241050

Be a Woman of Substance and a Woman of Influence

A recent survey on why so few women success in senior positions indicated that the decision makers and board directors thought it was because of women's parenting responsibilities.

Further research revealed that 49% of the women striving for recognition for senior promotions were single with no parenting or care responsibilities!

Many perceptions held in industry why women are not in senior roles are invalid but fuelled because of lack of visibility of women succeeding in senior positions.

For women to be recognised for their skills and talent, and not be overlooked because of preconceived ideas, we need to work together and change the perception.

What are you doing about addressing gender balance in the professional environment?

Are you:

a)         Proactively addressing the changes needed where you work, in doing so are also paving the way for successors

b)         Trying to make a difference, but need more support

c)         Doing very little as you don't feel empowered or don't have the time

d)         Nothing, as you are not interested

If you answered (a) - well done, please pass on this message to others, (b) Look at our event "Be a Woman of Influence" on11th May, (c) Look at our event "Be a Woman of Substance" on 1st May and (d) remember you would not be doing what you are doing now if others before you hadn't started the change that is not yet complete

We can only change the workplace cultural behaviour if we work together.

Or email for more info. Do hurry as we do have early bird offers and this means events will sell out quickly.

To take advantage of a WES members discounted rate please email Arpinder directly as this will not appear on Eventbrite.

Sticky Floors and Glass Ceilings

Wednesday 22nd April 2015

1 Day Career Development Course: for women working in engineering and advanced manufacturing

22nd April, 2015; 10am - 4pm, IET Teacher's Building, Glasgow

Do women hold themselves back? There is a considerable body of evidence which shows that women can encounter structural barriers to their progression in the SET professions - the glass (or sometimes concrete) ceiling. There is also evidence which points to the 'sticky floors' that can prevent women from making the most of their skills, knowledge and abilities - these are more internal barriers which can hold women back. The good news is that there can be progress on both fronts. Click here to register or find out more.

If you have any questions about the course above or our other career development opportunities for women, please contact Allison Johnstone, Equate Scotland,
