Kickstarter Project to Digitise WES Journal
Support our Kickstarter Project to Digitise the WES Journal from 1919 to 2004 by donating here. The Women's Engineering Society (WES) was started in 1919 and has been producing its Journal "The Woman Engineer" quarterly since 1919. The journals are currently held in the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) archives. The journals contain a wealth of knowledge not only of women in engineering but the journey of engineering in the UK since World War 1. The early journals also contain technical papers by female engineers. It is important that we do not lose the records of these WES role models and we maintain their achievements for future generations. Since 2004 the journals have been digitised and are available to download here. The IET also digitised the first journal for WES.
In 2019 WES will be 100 years old and we have started a project to catalogue the history of WES; digitising the journals is one part of the project. All digitised journals will be made available online to download. The money donated will pay to digitise the journals.

Engineering Women: Are they Returning?
23 June 2015 1 Birdcage Walk, London
The Women's Engineering Society 2015 conference is focusing on the theme of women returning to engineering. It has been estimated that 22,000 qualified women have not returned to the engineering sector after a career or maternity break, and these are skills that we can ill afford to lose when we face such a massive skills gap in the coming years. Not only are we losing out on these skills in engineering - skills that are often enhanced in many ways during the breaks - but we are failing to utilise the links that these women have with their local communities, schools, and other parents/influencers. With a bit of thought, organisation and encouragement we could mobilise this untapped resource and either reintroduce these skilled women to the engineering sector, or use them as ambassadors for our profession in other ways. This conference explores the opportunities and some of the best practices that are out there to access and utilise this neglected resource. Conference Chair: Meg Munn MP

Collectively united as "Engineers" female rugby players plan tour of South Africa!

Rugby has always been at the forefront of British Army sport and this year the Corps of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and the Corps of the Royal Engineers (RE) have successfully teamed up to field a strong representative women's rugby team.
Previously struggling for numbers due to the male dominance in the engineering trades, the combination of the two teams has allowed like minded individuals the opportunity to play for a successful representative team. Previously rivals on the pitch, the team gain motivation and solidarity from the pre-match cry of "Engineers" a collective identity that every player is proud to be a representative of. Between them the players cover a magnitude of engineering trades including civil engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers and vehicle mechanics.
In order to continue the development of cohesion between the two Corps the squad intend to conduct a two week tour of South Africa, where they will play three local teams whilst also getting involved in community coaching projects. Sport is a great platform for change; developing successful women's teams within the Corps is a great way to encourage more women into the engineering trades.
The trip is however in need of support, if you would like to have your name associated with the trip and are able to contribute financially for the Army wide advertisement this would provide then please contact the tours management on for further information.

Have you been assaulted as a female engineer?

One in ten engineers in the UK is a female. There is a pressing need to meet the demand of engineers in the UK says the UK engineering report 2015. But will the UK be able to meet its demand if females leave engineering due to assault at their work place?
If because of your gender you have been ill-treated at your work place come share your story with me. I am a MA student of Multimedia Journalism from University of Westminster. At the moment I am looking for someone who is willing to voice their story in detail.
To know more about my previous work on lack of female engineers in the UK visit the website
It is a radio documentary in which the president of WES, Dawn Bonfield encourages the female engineers in the UK by explaining the objective of the organisation. The aim of the documentary is to discover the reasons behind the shockingly low proportion of women engineers in the UK.

EDT launches new campaign to promote female engineers as role models

Earlier this month, The EDT (Engineering Development Trust) launched a campaign to raise the profile of women engineers as role models for young women.
It's no surprise that research shows that many young women are more likely to consider a celebrity or TV personality as a role model, than someone with a 'regular' job. A recent statistic reported that 50% of children at the age of 12 aspire to careers that are actually only undertaken by 5% of the population, such as footballers, TV presenters, dancers and actors. It is a sad statistic because it automatically means that 45% of 12 year olds are going to fail to fulfil their dreams.
With this in mind, EDT's FERM (Female Engineer Role Models) campaign aims not only to profile the careers of inspirational women in engineering but to also show their personal side in order for young women to identify with them and see the many doors a career in engineering can open. Each month EDT will be profiling a female in engineering with their 'FERM of the month' campaign, which will also be featured heavily across their social media channels and other communications.
As a supporter of WES, EDT would like to enlist women in engineering to support the campaign, by nominating their own FERMs. If younger women can start to understand the opportunities a career in the field can bring, and how exciting a role in engineering actually is, it will help to dispel the ongoing myths of engineering as a career, myths that so evidently still exist if you caught on to the Twitter storm brought on by Emma Watson's statement 'become an engineer'.
Help support this campaign by tweeting @TheEDTUK about your own #FERM and how other women have inspired you and are still inspiring you today! You can also nominate your own 'FERM of the month' by emailing your nomination

Cycling Science

Professor Andrea Sella and Max Glaskin will make presentations on science and cycling at science festivals this year. They're for audiences of the general public and are a lot of fun.
They talk, show slides and video clips, and do demonstrations. The presentations are flexible and last about 60 minutes, including an audience Q&A. At The Times Cheltenham Science Festival last year it sold out completely.
But they know the presentations lack something - women.
They are keenly aware that the profile of women must be raised, not just in cycling but also in science and engineering. Despite Andrea's first name he is, like me, male. So we've been trying to find women who can take part in the presentations.
Ideally wthey want women who cycle and have an expertise in some area of engineering or science that's relevant to cycling. Metallurgy, materials, polymers, carbon composites, structural engineering, dynamics, aerodynamics, sports physiology, nutrition, exercise & health etc.etc. They are open to other suggestions.
The presentations are as follows:
Edinburgh 5.30pm Sunday 12 April
Chester, early evening 24-25 April
Oxford, time 6.30pm 21 June
If any WES members are interested in joining us to take part in the presentations, please contact Max. Visit the website for more information and follow on Twitter @cyclingscience1
