Happy New Year to all our readers - member and non-members of WES.
For every reader of this newsletter only one in five of you will be a member of WES.
Those who are not members, have you thought about joining us? We desperately need the support of our members - both financially and as ambassadors for our cause - to continue to make progress in encouraging and supporting diversity in engineering. And I am talking to the men too. Members of WES are both men and women who are passionate about taking the action required to change our sector. You may or may not know that WES is run by a dedicated bunch of volunteers, so your membership money goes directly towards progressing our work. And it is all about taking action. This is the only way that we will make the changes we are looking for - the action that we take ourselves and the action that we encourage others to take. So if you are feel like joining us in our mission, and better still becoming a WES volunteer, ambassador or role model, then now is a great time as you will get 15 months for the price of 12. For professionals this works out at less than £1 per week, and for students we ask only £10 per year.
Membership has never been easier now that we have our online membership option for new members here.
Existing members will be able to manage their membership online soon.
Have a great New Year

Clare Balding to host 11th Annual First Women Awards
Nominations Open For First Women Awards 2015

Nominations are now open for the 11th annual First Women Awards, created by Real Business and supported by the CBI. The 2015 awards ceremony will be hosted by presenter, writer and BAFTA-winning broadcaster Clare Balding.
The awards are central to the First Women Programme, which was created to bring together and celebrate the success of senior-level businesswomen and professionals from a wide variety of often male-dominated sectors.
The First Women Awards feature 12 categories ranging from Public Service and Finance to Science & Technology. This year, two new categories have been introduced - First Woman in Entrepreneurship and Young Achiever of the Year, which celebrates successful women under 35.
First Women winners are known for their ongoing successes, as demonstrated by Melanie Leach, last year'sFirst Woman in Media. Previously MD of Twofour Broadcast, she has since been appointed Chief Executive of the Twofour Group.
Other 2014 winners included First Woman in Public Service recipient Danielle Cotton, Assistant Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade, and First Woman in Financewinner Sam Smith, CEO of FinnCap. Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Winners are chosen by a 20-strong judging panel. Confirmed judges include Amanda Phillips, Director at AP Consulting, who sat on former City of London Lord Mayor Fiona Woolf's Diversity Advisory Panel, and Brenda Trenowden, Head of the Financial Institutions Group for Europe and the Global Head of Funds for ANZ.
Katja Hall, CBI Deputy Director-General, commented:"Celebrating ground-breaking women across the UK helps inspire others. For businesses, harnessing talent from a diverse group of people is an essential ingredient for success. The CBI is proud to be supporting the First Women Awards."
Amy Carroll, Group Editor at Caspian Media, added: "The First Women Awards are all about recognising top-level female talent. Each year our winners demonstrate how many of the previously existing workplace barriers women have overcome. The night is an important chance to celebrate this."
Entries close on 10th April. Winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony, taking place at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square on Thursday 11th June, 2015.

I'm an Engineer, Get me out of here

I'm an Engineer, Get me out of here is an online public engagement event that gets scientists talking to school students all over the UK at imanengineer.org.uk.
For two weeks at a time, engineers answer students' questions and engage directly with them in live text-based chats. Students vote for their favourite engineer to win £500 to spend on further public engagement.
From 9th to 20th March, during Science Week, we will be running 6 engineering zones (i.e. Transport Zone, Apprentice Zone, Safety Zone...). You can see the full list here
We are recruiting engineers to take part in the event
Engineers can read more info and apply to take part before January 26th
Most engineers spend 2 hours a day on the event; half of which can be during the evening, outside of the work day. In return, they develop their communication skills, gain a fresh perspective on their work, and find out what young people think about engineers and the role of engineers. And all this, without leaving their desks!
If you have any questions, please contact Angela or 01225 326892.

The Marshall LaunchPad Scholarship

The Marshall LaunchPad Scholarship is aimed at children in the wider Cambridge area aged between 8 and 18 from selected schools. Initially there will be four primary, 5 secondary and 5 sixth form schools involved, with the aim to expand this number over time.
Marshall has realised that there is a lack of new engineers and an ever growing requirement for young people to enter the sector and consider careers in engineering. Therefore the programme has been designed to promote an interest and understanding around engineering by providing exciting activities and opportunities to the Children taking part.
It is a very unique programme that aims to support the student from aged 8 all the way to leaving school at age 18. The students who 'graduate' from the scheme will form an alumni, who can then go on to support the younger student who are entering the scheme.
A vital part of the programme is the desire to encourage more women to take up engineering and STEM subjects. We firmly believe that by targeting females at a young age, and engaging them in fun and exciting activities we can prove that engineering really can be an exciting and fulfilling career for both males and females.
