Women with Bright Ideas Competition

The 23 June 2014 was National Women in Engineering Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the work that women do in engineering and to showcase the great engineering careers available for girls.

To mark the occasion, Engineering Innovation Network - South West (EIN-SW) is teaming up with Wiltshire Enterprise and NT CADCAM, one of the UK's most established SOLIDWORKS resellers, to launch a Dragon's Den style competition exclusively for women.

The challenge goes out to all budding entrepreneurs with commercial ideas to submit their most creative ideas to a prestigious panel of judges.

Haydn Earl, EIN-SW project manager, said: 'There are almost 20,000 female engineers in the UK, with almost 400 working in a design engineering role. We hope this competition will inspire even more women to make their bright ideas commercial realities. 'We are looking for ideas which could be manufactured, are tangible and commercial. They do not need to be at the design or prototype stage and need only be submitted as a proposal."

Outline of competition

* We are looking for ideas that could be manufactured, are tangible and commercial.

* They do not need to be at the design or prototype stage and need only be submitted as a proposal.

* You are welcome to submit photos or YouTube links to support a prototype with your designs.

* Each idea will be considered on its own merit not by how advanced it has progressed.

* We have no wish to stifle your creativity and you are welcome to submit more than one idea!

How to enter

* Entries open 23 June and close July 31 2014. * To submit your entry, email EINSW EINSW@wiltshire.ac.uk. For further details, call Sheena Awdry 01249 466800 ex 6709.

Shortlisting

The successful entries will be contacted during August to discuss the support opportunities to prepare their 'Bright Idea 'for a showcase event in October when they will present to a prestigious panel of experts and potential investors who could support the product to a commercial reality.

Energy Leadership Academy

The Energy Leadership Academy takes place on 9 September.

Fuel your ambition

81% of the energy sector's workforce is male; compared to 54% across all sectors*. Additionally, the recently released PWC study** of the 100 largest listed oil and gas companies in the world found that women occupy only 11% of seats on the board of directors. The only sector with fewer women is the mining industry.

Leadership pipelines are dominated by men. Women are under-represented at board level, but also on the management board, where future executive directors hone their skills and experience. Given the energy sector is  facing serious recruitment challenges, no company can afford to cut itself off from 50% of the talent pool. Energy companies will benefit from the diversity of thoughts, skill and experience that women bring. Therefore, attracting and retaining female talent is imperative.

Following successful Leadership Academies focusing on transport & logistics, technology and advanced manufacturing and engineering, the everywoman in Energy Leadership Academy will help equip women with the skills they need in order to succeed in their careers. The Academy will focus on personal development for women in the sector, giving insight, skills development and great networking opportunities.

The Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Leadership Academy

The Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Leadership Academy is on 13 November 2014

Accelerate Your Career Progression

Semta, the employer-led body engineering skills for the future of UK industry, reports that of the total number of people working in Science, Engineering, Manufacturing and Technologies industries only 21% are female, compared to 48% for all sectors in the UK. The need to focus on the pipeline of female talent is apparent, with Semta predicting the need to train and retain an additional 82,000 scientists, engineers and technologists by 2016, to cope with growth and to plug skills lost through retirement.

Ensuring that women are equipped with the tools to succeed in their careers is vital. The Academy will focus on personal development - an essential consideration for any woman wishing to advance her career. Research commissioned by Alexander Mann Solutions and everywoman in 2012 found that although 80% of female middle managers wanted to progress, they did not prioritise their own training and development. The research also highlighted that STEM has the highest number female middle managers who wanted to progress (80%). The reality is that promotion opportunities do not just happen - you need to take stock and look at the bigger picture to take control of your career.

This Academy is for:

  • Women with aspirations to develop their career in advanced manufacturing and engineering
  • Future leaders in an organisation
  • Middle managers who want to move up to an executive level
  • Women managing a small team

Skyline Challenge London event helps young people in construction industry reach new heights

On the 28th of September the Heron Tower, one of London's most iconic buildings, will host a unique Skyline Challenge London event. This breathtaking event in aid of Construction Youth Trust, is being organised and supported by RBS and will raise funds to help vulnerable young people build brighter futures.

Construction Youth Trust works with young people aged 16 to 30 to help them overcome barriers and access employment opportunities in the construction industry.

The Trust works with young people from challenging backgrounds including young offenders, care leavers, the long-term unemployed and also those who are just unaware of the opportunities available to them within construction industry.

They offer young people the chance to find out more about careers in construction by giving them experience, the opportunity to meet employers in the industry and take part in informative and practical courses.

During Skyline Challenge London event up to 200 people, in teams of 4, will take their turn to run up 39 floors of the Heron Tower using a panoramic staircase. The Heron Tower stands at 755ft tall, the tallest building in the City of London, and will no doubt present a real challenge even for experienced climbers! Great panoramic views and after-event celebration are definitively worth the climb. The winning team with the lowest aggregate time will receive a special hand made trophy.

Young beneficiaries of Construction Youth Trust will be taking a major part in the event: competing, marshalling, and presenting some of their recent works on the top floor. The event should provide a great opportunity for them to develop their network by meeting people from different corporations that will also be participating in Skyline Challenge Event. If you would like to read more information, please visit us at the website or contact via email
