Karen Burt Award for Best Newly Qualified Chartered Engineer

The 2014 Karen Burt award is now open for nominations, and the forms are available on the WES website. Professional Engineering Institutions are requested to nominate their best newly qualified chartered engineer, and WES selects the winner from the nominated candidates. The aim of the award is to encourage women to apply for chartership as early as possible during their careers, and for PEIs to actively encourage their women members to apply. Statistics on the number of women members, chartered and incorporated engineers, technicians and fellows are also being collected and we urge PEIs to submit their data.

Magnificent Women (and their flying machines)

This outreach activity has now become a reality and has been delivered to over 90 pupils at Monk's Walk School in Welwyn Garden City and the London Metropolitan Archive event 'Engineering in the Archives' held during National Science and Engineering Week.

The event has three parts: a hands-on activity to replicate aircraft wing building activity during the war using Stixx (rolled up newspaper), Part 2 is a look at the Magnificent Women of history (see call for volunteers below), and Part 3 involves a talk from a current aerospace engineer on careers in engineering. We are grateful for a Centennial Grant from the Royal Aeronautical Society which has allowed us to finance this activity, and we are hoping that schools will be able to download the activity from the website to deliver themselves during NWED. See the photographs of the wings designed and built so far.

Volunteers Sought

Volunteers are sought to write single A4 resource sheets to accompany our Magnificent Women outreach project, which document the life of one woman engineer. Aimed at school students, these sheets will form a series of useful resources with the intention of raising the profile of notable women engineers from history. If you are able to write a sheet or two on your favourite magnificent woman engineer (dead or alive!), then please get in touch. The first sheet on Dorothee Pullinger can be seen here.

In addition to this we are always looking for more volunteers, so please let us know if you would like to help us.

The Woman Engineer Journal and Newsletter

The Woman Engineer Journal for Spring 2014 has now been sent out to WES members, and if you are a WES member and haven't received yours yet then please contact the office to check that we have your correct address. If you would like to receive a copy of the WES journal, join WES here. We are hoping for 950 new members in this, our 95th year. You may also be interested to read the first edition of The Woman Engineer from 1919 - available here www.wes.org.uk/content/enewsletter-and-journal.

MentorSET and Young WES

We are delighted to report that two new volunteers have been found to further these two WES initiatives. The first is a relaunch of our mentoring and training scheme MentorSET, which had previously run successfully for over 10 years supporting women engineers through a cross-sector scheme which individually matched women mentors with mentees to provide career mentoring. The second - Young WES - is an initiative to support girls who have expressed an interest in STEM careers at schools through a junior membership scheme which will effectively continue to 'nudge' them towards careers in STEM, through continued contact with them. The ability to continue to reinforce the message that STEM careers are suitable for girls is something that is currently missing, and whilst point interventions in schools are common it is the continuity of the message that is so important in keeping girls on track to careers in engineering, IT and allied technologies.

Any companies or individuals who would like to support these initiatives, please contact us.

The Institute of Physics - The Physics of Volcanic Eruptions

The Institute of Physics would like to invite you to a Lecture given by

Professor Heidy Mader.

Date: Thursday 10th April 2014

Venue: Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London, W1B 1NT

Time: 18.30 (registration from 18.00)

Our understanding of the processes operating during volcanic eruptions has advanced enormously in the last 50 years. This understanding has been driven by the application of fundamental science to the volcanic flows, which has seen volcanology develop from a field-based descriptive art into a highly quantitative, process-oriented scientific discipline.

This lecture will be an opportunity to hear first-hand about how physics, experimentation and modelling of eruptions is bringing us closer to the ultimate goal of achieving quantitative eruption forecasting.

Professor Heidy Mader is University Research Fellow in Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol. Her research interests cover a broad range of multiphase phenomena in the environmental sciences, specifically problems in volcanology and glaciology.

The full details about the lecture and speaker can be found here.

The lecture is free to attend and is open to all, physicists and non-physicists alike, so please feel free to pass this invitation on to your colleagues, relatives, students or anyone else whom you think would be interested. Places are limited, so for those wishing to attend, please register online

We look forward to seeing you there.

This lecture is part of the Opportunity Physics 2014 lecture series, to find out more about Opportunity Physics, please visit the website

Glasgow REDR

A number of Glasgow-based engineers have recently set up a local branch for REDR. Their intent is to provide awareness of disaster relief issues by organising monthly talks and workshops. They  will be launching our first workshop on the 7th of April  in the Glasgow Atkins office at 18.15

The events we are planning are open to all branches of engineering/interested parties in disaster relief issues.  After the launch event, the sessions will be held monthly for all interested to attend. The speakers will be either REDR members, or people who have experience and knowledge in issues related to disaster relief.  The aim of these sessions is to provide background knowledge on skills that are key for those wanting to be involved with REDR, and disaster relief in general.

Career Fair Volunteer Request

We have had a request from St Bernard's School in Westcliff-on-Sea for a delegate for their careers fair. The event takes place on Wednesday 7th May 2014 from 1.35pm to 5.00pm.

They look to raise the career aspirations of our students by holding an annual careers conference to which we invite career professionals, preferably female to talk to our students in an informal setting about their career journey.

The evening takes the form of delegates sat behind tables in our gym with posters, displays, power point presentations , leaflets or nothing to hand; just whatever they feel happy bringing along.

Students will have been briefed beforehand and will approach delegates with questions to ask regarding their career journeys, training, qualifications etc.

Year 9 and 10 students will be escorted to the fair by tutors throughout the school afternoon. Year 11 and parents will visit from 3.40 onwards and sixth form students will dip in and out during the afternoon and early evening.

If you can attend please contact the WES Office or Heulwn Davies at the school
