Engineering Inspiration 2013
|
|
The WES Student Conference took place last month and was a great success. 109 students and 46 engineers enjoyed 2 days at Aston University sharing technical inspiration and career stories. Speakers came from the very top of organisations right through to previous delegates returning to share their stories of starting work: Professor Dame Julia King and Allan Cook were joined by new graduate Ivone Sima of GE. The panel sessions ensured students could choose to hear speakers from relevant disciplines; it also meant more opportunity to ask a question than in one large plenary session. Topics included: dealing with men, maternity, mental health and stress issues as well as technology. Visit the website to read more.

Perkins Report, Consultations, Submissions and Meetings
| |
Following on from the discussions WES has had with Professor John Perkins and his team, the Perkins Report on Engineering Skills came out on 4 November. This is a great call to action to government, the industry, education and all concerned with the engineering community, and WES looks forward to being part of the delivery of some of the
targeted efforts to improve diversity.
WES submitted evidence in the summer to the Government consultation by the Science and Technology Committee into Women in Academic STEM Careers, and also to the consultation on Women in the Workplace. If you would like to see our submissions please ask.
In September WES participated in a round table discussion with MP Elizabeth Truss on getting girls into IT. In the next few weeks WES has been invited to participate at a BAE breakfast to discuss engineering talent, and a Ford round table to discuss how to encourage more women to study STEM subjects and take up careers in engineering.
WES has been involved in meetings to increase the diversity of engineering students at Bath University, and also to advise on diversity issues at Buckinghamshire New University and Newcastle College. We have also been contacted by a number of the new University Technical Colleges to help them attract more girls to engineering.
As a result of the increased activity in this area, we are looking at setting up a training course to address these issues. If you are interested in being involved in this, please get in touch.
