Notgoingtouni.co.uk is proud to support the Women's Engineering Society

www.notgoingtouni.co.uk is the UK's leading website dedicated to helping young people make informed decisions about their future by showing the opportunities that exist outside of the traditional university route such as entry level roles, apprenticeships, foundation & sponsored degrees.

We are enormously proud of the work we do with many of the major brands in the UK assisting them in attracting and engaging bright young people to their opportunities through a range of effective itinerary, both online and face to face.

NGtU have had 100's of engineering opportunities on the website, with clients that include; National Grid, EDF, Balfour Beatty, Tfl, Network Rail, Jaguar Land Rover, QinetiQ, Unilever, Environment Agency, BP, British Airways, Barratts, Carillion, Skanska and BAM Nuttall. Currently there are a total of 176 Engineering Listings on the site.

We often work with organisations, keen to attract a diverse pool of candidates to their workforce, particularly within Engineering, Construction and IT and we have worked on a number of campaigns where the focus has been to actively target female candidates.

NGtU helps to create campaigns that break down the myths and stereotypes that surround gender and at the same time also helps young people understand all the various options available to them, which they otherwise may not have considered. Our site attracts up to 100'000 visitors per month, so clearly there are a great number of young people considering their next career steps.

Key facts and figures

* Up to 100,000 young people visiting per month (16-24 years and 60% female)

* Our monthly e-newsletter is available to all NGtU subscribers (93,000+)

* Feature 100's of inspirational case study videos within our 'Be Inspired' section on the site

* We attend approximately 80 careers events each year, distributing our clients careers literature and reaching 250,00 young people

* NGtU will be visiting approx 1,000 schools in 2014 with some key partners to ensure our young people are better informed about all the options available to them Please visit the site www.notgoingtouni.co.uk and share your stories with us.

Although anyone can get involved they have just started a particular campaign called 'inspiring women' and will be holding a number of events through the year to bring together 15,000 women by next year, from different sectors and get them out to schools.

Students broken out of college to experience two of the uk's construction megaprojects

City & Guilds gives Birmingham students exclusive access to London's biggest construction sites

City & Guilds, a global leader in skills education, surprised six students from South & City College Birmingham by transporting them from their classroom to two of the UK's largest megaproject construction sites - Crossrail and The Leadenhall Building at 122 Leadenhall Street. The event was part of a series of 'Open Doors' experiences leading up to The Skills Show (www.theskillsshow.com), which takes place 14-16 November and for which City & Guilds is a Premier Sponsor.

Onsite deep below London at Crossrail, three students met with Peter Leyton, Site Agent - C510 SCL Tunnels - Whitechapel, where they were briefed on the Crossrail project. They participated in a health and safety introduction before touring the new Crossrail tunnels at the Whitechapel site.

Above ground at The Leadenhall Building three students visited the Laing O'Rourke site where employees talked to them about their work experiences including their own apprenticeships and right through to their current management roles before giving them a tour of the site, including an external lift ride up the side of the nearly complete building.

The final stop for the day was a visit to the viewing platform of another of London's iconic megaprojects - The View from The Shard.

The aim of the day was to illustrate to students how their current education could enable them to shape the world around us and play a key role in Europe's future megaprojects.

At each site the students were accompanied by experts and apprentices and found out more about the skills that will make them strong job candidates in the future; valuable advice as according to recent City & Guilds research almost 60% employers believe that their sector is facing a skills shortage.

Chris Jones, CEO and Director General of City & Guilds, said: 'It's absolutely critical that young people are given opportunities like this to connect with businesses. We know that a third of employers are prepared to look abroad to address skills gaps in their industries. This risks leaving this country's young people struggling to find work. All too often, students are pushed onto an academic route without learning about the value of a skills-based education. We are delighted to have teamed up with such a great team of partners to show these students just how far their vocational training can take them.'

WISE announce the winner of the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship.

WISE are delighted to announce that the winner of the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship this year is Harriet Vickers. Harriet was the only person in her school this year to apply to study engineering at university and is now at Durham University doing General Engineering (MEng). She has known she wanted to be an engineer since she was 13 years old and was attracted to engineering by the creativity aspect and the opportunity to change the world we live in. She has already had a lot of experience in the field; after doing work experience with National Grid and Arup, and last summer she went on an expedition to Tanzania and Kenya, working with local engineers to build foundations for a medical centre.

National Women in Engineering Day

23 June 2014 sees the launch of National Women in Engineering Day - the first event of its kind in the UK, aimed at raising the profile and celebrating the achievements of women in engineering, and encouraging more girls to consider engineering as a career. We are calling on you to get involved, and we want as many people as possible to spread the word and organise events on or around this day. Further details of how to get involved can be found here.

As part of National Women in Engineering Day we are producing a Register of Women Engineers, which will be made available publicly as a list of women who would be willing to be contacted by their local school in order to give talks to encourage girls to go into engineering. This list will also double as a list of women engineers who can be contacted by the media for comment on engineering issues. Please register your interest.
