Equal Pay Survey

Intellect's annual Equal Pay Survey looks to understand peoples perceptions around equality of pay in their organisation, their industry and most importantly for them.  In its 6th year they are looking to understand how the recession impacted women's pay and whether this has changed since the UK moved into recovery.

They are keen to hear your views both through the questions and your comments.

The survey is all about your perceptions and experiences and should only take 5mins. To take part in the survey click here.

All responses are anonymous and comments will not be linked to any other data.  If you have any concerns or questions please email Carrie Hartnell

Celebrating over 100 years of Women in Technology

When the funding for the Bradford-based UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Construction came to an end earlier this year, all their material was donated to the Feminist Archive North (FAN) based in Special Collections, the Brotherton Library, at the University of Leeds. FAN already had holdings from local positive action programmes - and volunteers who were experienced activists from the 1970s! Two of these - Ailsa Swarbrick (the OU's Women in Technology 1980 - 1994) and Lynette Willoughby (President of the Women's Engineering Society 1993-5) have collaborated with Special Collections in mounting a special exhibition in the Brotherton Library from 1 October to 30 November 2013.

The exhibition includes fascinating materials from FAN which look back over initiatives and campaigns to encourage and support women wishing to study and work in various areas of technology. It ranges from the establishment of the Women's Engineering Society in 1919 and the Electrical Association for Women in 1924, through the government WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) campaign of 1984 and the Open University Women in Technology initiative of 1980 to the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Construction set up in 2004. The exhibition will include posters used to publicise successful women engineers, scientists and apprentices as role models as well as a rich variety of campaign material, memorabilia, leaflets and pamphlets. To set the scene, at the entrance there is an EOC poster ofCaroline Herschel, 18thC astronomer and a wonderful first edition of her Additions and Corrections to Flamsteed's (the Astronomer Royal) Catalogue of the Stars.

Advance II

Date: 30 October 2013

Time: 08.30 - 11.00am

Cost: Free

An event focusing on diversity and cities as part of CIC's 25th Anniversary celebrations.

Advance II, Diverse Cities is an event developed to share ideas with a range of built environment practitioners and professional interested in diversity, our cities and society.

Diverse Cities

Urbanisation is developing at an unprecedented rate; an estimated 3.5 billion people now live in cities with a predicted 2 billion increase over the next 20 years. The World Bank describing this growth as "the defining phenomenon of the 21st century".

This presents a significant challenge for established and emerging cities. How do we develop and create people centred cities responding to the needs of diverse and changing populations? Our panel will present a range of approaches and responses.

Join our discussion and debate on the future of UK and international cities.

Speakers on the day include:

Sarah Hewitt, Lily Bernheimer Spaceworks Consulting - Psychology, environmental impact and cities

National Women in Engineering Day

23 June 2014 sees the launch of National Women in Engineering Day - the first event of its kind in the UK, aimed at raising the profile and celebrating the achievements of women in engineering, and encouraging more girls to consider engineering as a career. We are calling on you to get involved, and we want as many people as possible to spread the word and organise events on or around this day. Further details of how to get involved can be found here.

As part of National Women in Engineering Day we are producing a Register of Women Engineers, which will be made available publicly as a list of women who would be willing to be contacted by their local school in order to give talks to encourage girls to go into engineering. This list will also double as a list of women engineers who can be contacted by the media for comment on engineering issues. Please register your interest.

And finally....

If you have any articles that you would like to have featured please contact the WES Office.
We'd love to hear your stories of ideas to inspire young people, schools outreach activities and projects you are working on that we can share across the WES community.

Don't forget to forward our e-newsletter to your friends and contacts, male or female and help to inspire more young women to consider engineering and technology as a career.
