MP Announced as New Patron of WES

The MP, Meg Munn, will be working with the Women's Engineering Society (WES) to help ensure that more female students from science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects go on to careers in the professions after graduating, as currently less than half of STEM graduates do so. The Society will also be working with the MP to support companies and organisations to increase gender diversity, and to launch a new awareness day to celebrate Women in Engineering in June 2014, which will mark the 95th anniversary of the Women's Engineering Society.
Meg Munn MP said:
"I am delighted to become patron of the Women's Engineering Society and I am looking forward to working with them to address some of the issues facing women in STEM. We know that the new innovations that will help us all to live longer and improve our quality of life will come from the next generation of scientists, technologists and engineers. Yet, we know that there are job vacancies in these fields, where women continue to be underrepresented. The work of the Women's Engineering Society will play a vital role in ensuring these issues are addressed as they are important for us all."
Dawn Bonfield, WES Vice President, said: "We know that more women are needed in engineering to increase the thought diversity that is necessary to solve the global engineering challenges we face as a society. One of the challenges is to get the message over to the younger generation of girls that engineering is a great career to follow."

IET Women's Network event - Standing Out

Manchester, June 13th 2013.
The IET Women's Network is a development that aims to support under-represented groups within engineering, primarily women in engineering. We are taking an active role by engaging with our women members in order to create a sense of community, support and encouragement.
About the Event
Think about a time when you haven't created the impact you would choose. What happened? What could you do differently? Think about a time when someone saw an issue very differently from you. Why did they think they were right? Our personal impact is within our control and can be carefully shaped and crafted according to our guiding principles - our values. Ultimately, it will affect everything we do and say in life and work and it is what other people will remember about us.
The following areas will be covered:
Resilience
Being a woman in a man's world can be difficult. In this exercise we look at resilience, what it is, why it's important and how to apply it.
Persuasion
We'll look at some of the underpinning theory of persuasion - starting with Aristotle over two thousand years ago and bang up to date with Cialdini and his research. So what's new?
Motivation
Influencing and motivating are related but not quite the same, so in this exercise we explore the nature of motivation and how to uncover and push buttons on people so they want to do the things you want them to do.
Using Authority
Authority is a tricky one for a woman. Too little and nothing gets done. Too much and you are seen as a harridan and overly aggressive. So in this exercise we will explore the middle ground - an appropriate level of authority and a way of doing it that sits easily with the gender role. We will play with turning authority up and down and with standing your ground in the face of opposition.
Acknowledging Their Truth
Everyone has their own truth - in this one we explore the impact of understanding and acknowledging the other person's.
Holding an Intention
We all impact on others throughout our lives sometimes the effect can be quite random. So we will explore the power of intention and see how the impact varies with a different intention and a different intensity. We will apply the technique to different types of conversations to see how it helps.
Take Aways
Participants will be emailed hand-outs, links, and documents to support and augment this programme.

WISE Awards 2013

The WISE awards 2013 are open for nominations.
We are very grateful to the Science Museum for hosting the awards ceremony this year and to all our award sponsors.
Awards celebrate efforts to tackle Britain's recruitment crisis in science, technology, engineering and manufacturing
Tackling Britain's recruitment crisis in science, technology and engineering can only be achieved by increasing the number of skilled women going into these industries, said Helen Wollaston, Director of Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), speaking at the launch of the WISE Awards 2013.
"Despite the economic downturn, more than 40% of firms needing people with science, technology engineering or maths (STEM) skills have difficulty in recruiting staff. Some companies manage to buck the trend and thereby increase the pool of talent available to grow their business. The WISE Awards celebrate their efforts in providing leadership to the sector and showcase the contributions women are already making to science, technology, engineering and manufacturing."
Nick Langdon, CEO, Card Geotechnics Ltd who won a WISE Award in 2012 for corporate leadership said:
"The business case for gender equality is not one of how do we justify the employment of women engineers, but one of why on earth would we preclude considering over 50% of the population and some of the brightest graduates available to UK plc."
As well as celebrating corporate champions and individual female talent, the WISE Awards recognise the role of teachers, advisors and mentors who inspire girls with a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Nominations for the WISE Awards 2013 opened today. The awards will be presented at a high profile evening event on Thursday 14 November at the Science Museum in London.
Nominations are invited in 10 categories, which include three new awards:
WISE Girl, to identify a young role model to inspire other girls with a passion for STEM subjects
WISE Apprentice, to encourage more women to take up technical apprenticeships
WISE Media Award, recognising the critical role of the media in shaping attitudes
Deputy Director Heather Mayfield explained why the Science Museum is supporting this year's awards:
"The Science Museum is delighted to host and support the WISE Awards 2013. So much of our lives and future prosperity depends on the work, imagination and commitment of scientists and engineers. This event enables us to celebrate and support women making a contribution in all fields of science, technology and engineering as well as giving us a great opportunity to encourage the next generation who will engineer our future."
Nominating for a WISE Award is simple: individuals and organisations can nominate themselves or nominate a person or organisation they believe deserves a WISE Award. There is no charge for entering, simply complete the nomination form and submit it to us via email before the closing date which is noon on Wednesday 31 July 2013. Full details are on the WISE website
