UK team named First Place Champions at Lego League World Festival
The group of Bath students who won the UK National First Lego League (FLL) final have gone on to win first place at the FLL World Festival in the USA.
Eighty teams from across the world were present at the event, which took place last week (April 24-27) in St. Louis, Missouri. The winning team from the UK, 'Untitled-1' impressed the judges with their doorbell fingerprint scanner; an invention for elderly people to see who is at their front door before opening it.
Made up of four girls and three boys from Ralph Allen School and King Edward's School in Bath, Untitled-1 were named Champions of the UK leg of the tournament in January, which was run by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Over 21,000 schools took part in the tournament across the world.
One member of Untitled-1, Claudia Moorhouse, said: "I loved every second. When we won I was the happiest person on the planet. I didnt want to get my hopes up when the judges got interested in us so I was not expecting it."
Her teammate, Freya Alder, added: "We want to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and use it to make FLL as big in the UK as it is in America."
Ahmed Kotb, FIRST LEGO League Project Manager at the IET, said: "Big congratulations are due to the Untitled-1 team from Bath, who have worked really hard in the run up to the World Festival. Over 29,000 teams took part across the world and to be recognised for all their hard work is just a dream come true for them!
"A big part of what we do at the IET is encouraging young people to study science and technology subjects and to consider careers in engineering. This is our first year as Operational Partner for the FIRST LEGO League competition here in the UK and what a start! FIRST LEGO League is such a great way to get young people interested in engineering and we encourage more schools to get involved."
Schools seeking to get involved in the new season of FIRST LEGO League will be able to register by mid-May 2013 via the website. In the 2013 Nature's Fury Challenge, children aged 9-16 will explore the awe-inspiring storms, quakes, waves and other natural disasters. Teams will discover what can be done when intense natural events meet the places people live, work, and play. |

HerSay - a new website for female experts
HerSay - a new media resource centre for female experts.
HerSay aims to improve women's representation in the media by providing an invaluable resource for producers and journalists who want to use more female experts either in broadcast media or to provide quotes for print or online publications.
The website launched four weeks ago, but already has over 300 female experts signed up covering a huge range of expertise.
So far, the experts include a former race car and stunt driver, a world backgammon champion, the founder of the world famous Green & Blacks chocolate company, and an award-winning sake sommelier.
Former commercial jet pilot Captain Janet Alexander signed up to become our 100th expert. Another trailblazing woman who has signed up is world record-holder Tracy Edwards MBE - skipper of the 1st all-female crew to sail around the world.
These are just a few of the experts, but every single one of the women who has signed up to join HerSay have achieved great things in their individuals fields. The quality and quantity of the experts signing up has been astonishing.
The website is completely free to use for experts and media who complete a simple registration process. Data protection is taken very seriously and the experts details will not be seen or passed on to any third party unless they specifically authorise us to. Once they have signed up, journalists will be able to contact them through the secure email and SMS service.
HerSay aims to help women raise their own profile within their chosen fields and boost the number of inspirational female role models. They will also provide support through regular events ranging from media training and public speaking courses through to professional photography shoots and styling advice.
Women with all levels of expertise are being welcomed to join as HerSay - whether they are recognised leaders in their field or have personal stories to tell from their own life experiences.
HerSay is being run by an experienced team of PR and media professionals at iNHouse Communications, a company founded and run by women. It has already attracted high-profile sponsors including Bloomberg and global engineering and infastructure company CH2M HILL.
They already have some female engineers on the database, but would love to have more. If you would like to join then sign up via the website.

Win a Paid Internship at Sharp Laboratories of Europe
Sharp Europe today launches a unique competition, giving European students the opportunity to win a paid summer internship at its Research and Design centre, Sharp Laboratories of Europe, in Oxford, UK. The internship offers one lucky student a once in a lifetime chance to work on a new project that could go on to become a central part of our everyday lives.
London, 9 April 2013 - The competition is open to any students who have an interesting solution to an everyday problem. It might be helping people get out of bed in the morning, solving their cooking conundrums or aiding in the quest to cut electricity usage. To enter, students simply need to sketch their idea, take a photo of the sketch and share it on Twitter with the hashtag #GetItDownOnPaper by 27 May 2013.
Ian Thompson, Director at the Laboratories says: "What we are looking for is someone full of enthusiasm, originality and genuine curiosity. This is a unique opportunity for someone passionate about science to work on cutting-edge technologies and a project that could eventually be put into production. We've got a great track record at Sharp Laboratories of Europe of innovating products and inventing new technologies, but people are at the core of everything we do, and it's vital to nurture the next generation. Good luck, and we look forward to seeing your ideas."
Every day, scientists at Sharp Laboratories work to come up with new ideas and technologies that can benefit society. The lab is responsible for cutting edge innovations like mobile LCD technology, smart cards, DualView, the 'lab in the palm of your hand' and many others that have helped solve a genuine human need.
Paul Molyneux, CEO of Sharp Europe says, "
We're really passionate about developing the next generation of inventors. We don't invent for the sake of it, we believe our products should solve real human problems to benefit our culture and wellbeing. That is why we want your ideas on how to fix an everyday human problem. The winner with the best idea has a fantastic opportunity to work at our research laboratories developing future technologies that we hope will help aid society. I look forward to looking over the entries. Best of luck and remember, #GetItDownOnPaper."
A panel of judges at Sharp Labs will whittle entries down to 3 finalists with Humans Invent interviewing each finalist about their idea and how it will work. The deadline for entries is May 27th. The winner will be announced on www.HumansInvent.com on June 10th with the placement beginning on the 1st July for 2 months. Good luck and remember - #GetItDownOnPaper
