WES 'Voices' Project launches new poster
Members of WES were joined on 20 March, as part of National Science and Engineering Week at the Royal Academy of Engineering to unveil the poster from the WES 'Voices' project by pupils from Quintin Kynaston Community Academy and St Catherine's Catholic Girls' School.
The poster featured a cupcake in Mary Berry influenced 1950's palette with the strapline 'Engineering - it's in everything'. The poster front aims to engage interest and demands 'Where's the engineering in that?' The back of the poster features eight role models talking about their course or career and influences.
The Voices project was funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and will see the launch of a report examining the diversity in engineering as well as the influences on young women. The project was undertaken by Sean McWhinnie of Oxford Research and Policy in association with Jan Peters of Katalytik.

London Metropolitan Archive and WES
On IWD 2013 the London Metropolitan Archive organised a day to look at women involved in Science who feature in their archives. This was a fascinating day, which included a talk by Anne Locker of IET who spoke about the women in engineering from the WES archive at Savoy Place. She spoke about Caroline Haslett, Elizabeth Laverick and Rosalind Messenger - all of whom had prominent roles in the history of WES. This got us thinking that we could do a lot more with the archive collection that we have, and this might be an area of interest to one of our members looking to do some research work on the history of women in engineering, and how this can be used for outreach work to encourage more girls into the subject. The LMA had some fabulous photographs showing women constructing the aircraft wings during World War 1, and with the start of WW1 being commemorated next year, this might be a possible area of funding for WES, and certainly something that we should be looking back at. If any member is interested in this aspect of WES, please contact the office to discuss it further. You may also be interested in updating the WES website pages featuring our Pioneering Women, and Past Presidents.

WES exists to promote engineering to women but also to encourage those already in the profession, to this end we have series of events throughout the year in the West of Scotland.
Tuesday 30th April, 6pm - Tunnocks tea cake factory visit
We have been granted 12 spaces on an evening tour of Tunnock's factory in Uddingston, there will be refreshments as part of the tour. The minimum age for the tour is 12 and as numbers are so limited, if we are oversubscribed then priority will go to WES members.
Wednesday 5th June, 7pm - Pub evening
A get together just to chat and get to know other members, the date and time may change but we'll give details when we decide on the venue.
Saturday in August, summer afternoon get together in Darvel including tea, cake, croquet and a visit to the telephone museum. Kids and families are welcome, this is where we plan the next years activities.
4th October 2013 IESIS - date still to be confirmed
WES is a small society in Scotland so we use the IESIS dinner as our annual smart get together. We would love to fill 2 tables this year so go on put it in your diary to come.
If you are joining us for an event please drop an e-mail to the WES Scottish circle secretary, Anne
