WES Prize - at the IET's Young Woman Engineer

Charlotte Tingley

Charlotte Tingley, a Euro Fighter Typhoon aircraft engineer from BAE Systems won the WES Prize at the IET's YWE (Young Woman Engineer) event in London in December.

Charlotte started with the company BAE Systems in 2006 as an Advanced Technical Apprentice after finishing her GCSE's. She completed a 3 year apprenticeship gaining experience and qualifications in the Aerospace Engineering Industry. During my apprenticeship she was a finalist for the BAE Systems Apprentice of the Year 2010 and won the Category for Community Achievement.

On completion of her apprenticeship she was employed as a Test technician for Helmet Production at Rochester, Working on some fantastic technology such as the Harrier Jump Jet Helmet and the world's most advanced pilot's helmet the Euro Fighter Typhoon Aircraft. Within 3 months of being a Test Technician she was promoted to Leading Hand, being the Youngest ever to achieve this role at Rochester.

After two years being a Leading Hand, she was selected from the entire pool of manual workers to harness test knowledge by electronically analysing test failure data and recommend corrective actions that contribute to product reliability and safety, this known as Real Time FRACAS (Failure Review and Corrective Action System) at Rochester.

Outside of work she likes to volunteer and give back something to those less fortunate. I had the privilege of spending 12 weeks on a remote island in Fiji last October. I was involved in a Marine Conservation Project to Educate the Local Fijians about their surrounding Marine Life on the coral reefs, this being their primary source of food. During her 12 weeks she conducted reef surveys daily utilising her scuba qualifications.

Another interesting fact is that she is the Lead Vocalist for the music band Charlie and the Stone Ages heroes gigging at Functions and Pubs around the region.

WES Survey

Calling all WES members and other e-newsletter readers.

WES is conducting a review of its activities to ensure that we are doing the most effective things to inspire more girls and women to study and practice engineering and allied sciences, maths, technology, construction, ICT etc.

It would be very helpful if you could, please, fill in the web-based questionnaire to be found here.

We also have a Diversity Monitoring Form which will enable us to check that we are reaching a diverse audience.

Filling any of this in is entirely voluntary, but please fill in as much as you wish by clicking here.

WES Student Conference 2012 - Engineering Inspiration

Over for another year, Engineering Inspiration left all who took part filled with a sense of energy and positivity with memories of a great venue at Conference Aston. Thanks for all your support.

The Friday workshops helped build self confidence and self belief, the reception and dinner enabled everyone to practice their networking skills by swapping dots and career tips were exchanged with early career engineers over dinner. All were delighted with the speakers who were impressed by the quality and quantity of questions during Saturday's sessions.

We are especially appreciative to our sponsors, Jaguar LandRover, GE and Selex and members of WES for helping make this event possible.

Make sure your students or your company don't miss out in November 2013!

Grant Awarded to WES from the Royal Academy of Engineering.

WES has been awarded a grant from the Royal Academy of Engineering to follow up the work done for the HE STEM Set to Lead project. We will be updating figures on where student engineers go and producing a poster aimed at school years 9 to 13 containing messages and stories from undergraduates students. Focus groups will be held at Cardiff on 31st January 5-7pm and at Sheffield Hallam University on 30th January. For further details about the project contact the WES Council Student Lead Gemma Whatling

WES Workshop - How to run a successful student group

Student Conference workshop 2012

We had a fantastic turn out to this workshop leading into the WES Student Conference on 16th November at Aston University. With over 30 attendees, this lead to valuable discussions on the importance of networks, the potential difficulties in establishing networks, and key points to success. We had talks from 7 attendees from across the UK, giving insight into student networks at their respective University. There is a huge amount of enthusiasm for student groups and networks both within Universities and nationally which has helped shape WES student plans for the future. If you are interested in telling us about your student group, establishing one or you would like to get in contact with groups from your past Universities to share your experiences as an engineer, please get in touch.

The Technology Strategy Board

The Technology Strategy Board is driving innovation by stimulating technology enabled innovation in the areas thought to be the best for boosting growth and productivity in UK industry, in the areas of the greatest potential benefit, helping today's emerging technologies become the growth sectors of tomorrow. It is an executive non-departmental public body (NDPB), established by the Government in 2007 and sponsored by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).The activities of the Technology Strategy Board are jointly supported and funded by BIS and other government departments, the devolved administrations, regional development agencies and research councils. 2012 WISE Diversity Award

EDT has won the 2012 WISE (Women in to Science and Engineering) Diversity Award.

The Chief Executive Dr Gordon Mizner had the privilege of accepting the award on behalf of EDT from HRH The Princess Royal at the awards ceremony held at the IET in Central London.

The award "Celebrates the achievement of organisations in building diversity and engaging with young people."

This award recognises the hard work and efforts made by EDT over many years to encourage more girls, ethnic minorities and widening participation in general into STEM study and careers. It recognises the focus we have on this across all our schemes, and also those programmes specifically aimed at this agenda.

Request for a speaker

We have had a request for an inspirational woman engineer to attend a school gifted and talented evening event for year 11 students (GCSE) to speak for 10 minutes about engineering. The school is Greenshaw High School in Sutton, Surrey. If you would like further details please contact the WES Office.
