Networking event with WES and AIRBUS Women's network, 18 October 2012

The Women's Engineering Society and AIRBUS Women's network invite you to a networking event at Airbus, Bristol.

We will bring together women and men seeking to support women in what have traditionally been seen as men's roles, for example in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Particularly welcome will be working women engineers, in industry and academia, members of professional institutions and anyone who has set up, supports or participates in a women's network.

The event is in two parts, and you are invited to attend either or both.

Contact WES Vice-President Jackie Longworth to receive further information, and visit the WES website to book.

Ada Lovelace Live! Event on 16 October 2012

Ada Lovelace Live! Featuring the WES Karen Burt Award is taking place on Tuesday 16th October 2012 at the IET London, Savoy Place.

This evening of celebration and entertainment features an evening of science, technology, comedy and song on Ada Lovelace Day. Join Helen Arney, Dr Suzie Sheehy, Gia Milinovich, Dr Helen Scales, Helen Keen, Dr Alice Bell, Sarah Angliss and Sydney Padua and experience all manner of wonders, from particle physics to the secrets behind our fridges' hum, from performing robots to a celebration of the Shark Lady, marine biologist Eugenie Clark. We'll also hear about the Mercury 13, the group of women who independently underwent the same astronaut training as the Mercury Seven but never met as a group and never went into space.

Kate Cooksey, the winner of the Women's Engineering Society Karen Burt award for best newly qualified Chartered Engineer will be presented with her award.

Ada Lovelace Day Live! is an event not to be missed!

Tickets are £10.00 for the general public, and £5 for Students and are available from the WES website.

WES Student Conference 2012 - Engineering Inspiration

A forum for women engineering students to meet other technical students, employers, early and mid career women in an informal and friendly environment with a mixture of workshops and talks.

Friday 16th - Saturday 17th November 2012 Aston University

The WES Student Conference has become an annual event - building on the success of previous WES Doris Gray Student events - in bringing women engineering students together for two days to connect and be inspired by each other and by professional engineers. The programme offers a mix of personal development and confidence sessions with insights into emerging technologies. Through a formal dinner students are able to talk in more depth with early/mid career engineers from different companies.

The aim is to provide an opportunity for women who might be one of only a handful on their course to meet other technical women and to extend their network and also to meet women who are managing to balance their work and family life.

Previous feedback includes: "Super speakers, great experience".

Engineering Inspiration - WES Student Conference

Can you help?

The organisers are looking for 10 women engineers - ideally WES members from a variety of disciplines to attend the Student Dinner on Friday 16 November. Others can attend, but in order to fulfil our promise to the students - that is to give them the chance to meet early career women - we are looking for women working in industry broadly under 35-40.

If you think you can help please contact either Jan Peters or Carol Marsh.

We are also looking for sponsors for the event so if you or your company would like to be involved please contact Jan or Carol for further details.

For more details on the event visit the website.

Calling the UK's Leading Women in Technology!

Nominations for 2013 FDM everywoman in Technology awards are open

Applications are being welcomed for the UK's leading Awards scheme recognising the achievements of women working in IT. The 2013 FDM everywoman in Technology Awards recognise the achievements of women working in the sector and aim to encourage a pipeline of new talent who will become future industry leaders.

This Awards program, backed by industry leaders, aims to encourage women to see technology as a fast-moving, innovative sector where they can excel, as demonstrated by the role models unearthed since the programme's launch in 2011.

The awards program will culminate in a glittering awards ceremony to be held on 19 March 2013 at The Savoy.

Entries are open from 7 September 2012 until 19 November 2012 and full details are online

WES Karen Burt 'Best Newly Qualified Chartered Engineer' Award Winner Announced

The Women's Engineering Society is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2012 Karen Burt Award for the best newly qualified Chartered Engineer is Kate Cooksey from the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Kate is a tunnelling engineer employed by UK construction and infrastructure business Morgan Sindall, currently working on the Crossrail project. She has had an outstanding career to-date having been recognised on a number of occasions already for her contributions to engineering. A graduate in Civil Engineering from Cardiff University, Kate has been actively involved since her student days in the set-up of student and graduate groups to promote civil and tunnelling engineering, notably setting up the British Tunnelling Society Young Members Committee in 2008. In recognition of her achievements, Kate made the 2012 Management Today 35 Women Under 35 List, was a finalist of the Women of the Future Awards - Science and Technology Category - in 2009, and a finalist of the NCE Graduate Awards 2008.

The Karen Burt Award will be presented on 16th October 2012 at the Ada Lovelace Live! event in London - an evening of entertainment in celebration of women in STEM, which takes place at the IET London, Savoy Place WC2R 0BL, starting at 6.30pm.

Tickets are £10 each and on sale at the WES website - all welcome.

Girls and young women design, build, and race cars in engineering challenge

Sunday 14th October 2012

Two worlds that have been traditionally seen to be dominated by men are getting a much-deserved female boost.

Motorsport, and Engineering

Teams of school girls and students from all over the UK will be among 100 teams racing their cars round Goodwood Motor Circuit in the Greenpower National Finals on Sunday 14 October.

The girls and young women have designed, built, and raced single-seater electric race cars as part of a nationwide initiative to get more young people into engineering careers.

Many will be in all-female teams, and others will be part of mixed teams (motorsport is one of the fairly few sports where men and women compete together).

If this is something your organisation would be able to publicise, or get involved in in any way, please contact us.
